Is Strasbourg.info worth more than Rochester.info? Depends on who is buying.

Civic leaders often fail to invest significantly in an online presence. Two examples:

The city with the #1 ranked web site in the US is Denver, Colorado. You can do dozens of things online. Pay bills, access city information, schedules. It's great. The site is linked in with all the city, county and state agencies. www.denvergov.org This functionality doesn't come cheap, their budget for the site is >$350k/yr.

Our city web page, which happens to be the capital of New York, is ranked 60th out of 70 cities.

Budget is $56k or so, for all staff and development. Doesn't look like there is $$$ to buy a name here. I suspect reg fee alone was paid for albanyny.org, the present site name.

New York City.info returns an "Under Construction" page. Go figure.

I suspect that if you went to a city council meeting in Rochester and tried to explain "Google hits," you would get a lot of confused stares.

If Donald Trump wanted newyorkcity.info, well, that's another story.

There is no valuation model in this case, only practical realities of cities dealing with budget cuts and federal mandates. As always, the name is worth what someone will pay for it.

Second, I don't have such a huge ego that I'd need to wait for some later day to apologize so I do it now since I did end up hurting your feelings. I guess I am not good at being candid and say things the way I see them and always do so in a manner not sounding gruff. I was trying to convey my perception of your having an unrelenting bias towards new tlds along with an unfailing belief in .com's pemanence as well as a tendency to offer comments/advice that for some can be irritating at times. But again, I guess its not for you to worry about...its for folks like myself to see where they can fit in and where they can't!

The proper, logical place for official city government sites in the United States is at ci.[cityname].[state].us, like ci.miami.fl.us. There's no "valuation model" there (the domains are available only to the legitimate governments of the respective cities and aren't bought and sold), but if all cities followed it, it would be easier to figure out the URL of a given city instead of the crazy-quilt you get when people don't follow logic.

Many a time, the reality Dan is that we expect others to follow the "logic" that meets our own standards of same. Many of us, especially someone like yourself, should realize that for the most part the evolution and expansion of DNS has been chaotic and disorganized, in part due to the unexpected speed with which things have happened over the last few years. I know you generally despise commercialization of DNS but how could this have been prevented in the face of the radical evolution of the web itself from being primarily an academic tool to one where even academia is in hot pursuit of reaping its commercial benefits? So, when city governments deviate from something like "ci.miami.fl.us" to "miami.com" they simply do so to make it easier for their potential "consumers" (tourists, out of state businesses) to remeber their catchy url....so its all/mostly motivated by monetary concerns and not necessarily logic...pure logic does not pay the bills and the politicians whom we elect as our leaders know that very well; imo at least, this practice of commercializing the DNS is not as appauling as the desire to turn all the states/cities into Nevada/Las Vegas to boost the revebues.
