Suggestion For Requesting Appraisals

Hi Fellow DNFers

I often see people make a post to request an appraisal on their domain, and no one replies.

I think one of the main reasons that such requests sometimes go unreplied is that the domain names posted are of poor quality, and no one wants to seem rude by stating that the poster's domains aren't worth anything.

I think appraisal requesters would get more feedback if their appraisal request posts included a poll, so that other DNFers could express their opinions without the risk of seeming rude.

Further, I would suggest the following four categories for such a poll:

1) Not worth the registration fee.
2) Worth up to $100.
3) Worth $100 - $1000.
4) Worth more than $1000.

If any particular poster feels the need to make additional comments, they can always post to the thread.

Miles, I like the idea. To cater to those with very valuable names it might be good to make:
4) Worth $1,000 - $10,000
5) Worth more than $10,000

I always feel badly for newbies who post and get no response.

great idea, the only problem is there are 2 classes of value - theres the reseller/ebay price and theres an end user approach price which would fall under different categories.

maybe a less value orientated approach could be adopted, like a rating from 1 to 10 or something.

That sounds good too, although it is my sense that people like to see a price tag attached to things.

To me, the most important thing here is the option to express the opinion that the domain(s) in question are not worth the registration fee, which is the case much of the time.

But, whichever way this poll is "standardized," perhaps something can be permanently noted in the appraisal section in a visible way, so that people making new appraisal-seeking posts can see this suggestion. And perhaps that permanent note can suggest the two variants: price or non-specific 1-10 scale.

As for the different price points in the poll...that's a good idea...but the main thing here is to put in a poll with your appraisal request domain (and make sure you have a low-value/zero-value category), so that people can give you honest feedback without seeming rude. All the polls are individualy set, anyway.

The only thing that I would again suggest in conjunction with this is that Dan and the mods consider putting some kind of note (if the forum software allows this) in the appraisals thread with this suggestion. I honestly think using the poll option will get people more feedback on their domains.

P.S. One further suggestion: perhaps Dan, the mods and some biggerr sellers like DNPowerful can "sit down" one weekend and draft the DNF guide to domain value, giving some tips on what makes for a valuable domain, and post in in some kind of closed thread or separate link. I think the experienced and successful folks here could really help others who, despite the collapse of the domain industry "gold rush," continue to register domain names of no value.

Yes it would be a great idea to include categories for domain name pricing. Remember to include;

Worth $100-$500
Worth $500-$1000
Worth $1000- $5000
Worth - Get yourself a lawyer - $Big McLawsuit.

I like this idea, also. A poll of some type would allow responders some working range of appraisal instead of blunt, open-faced judgement that has no boundaries. Maybe having a poll like this would be descriptive enough and be appraiseworthy enough for the domain holder to make a somewhat educated decision on how to proceed with his or her valuable/not valuable domain.

I think not! Just appraise the damn things, thats what an appraisal is...someones opinion!
He says this, she says that...just apparise them from your own experience. Sheesh already! Even if that poll is used there will still be just as much controversy. Then everyone will say the amounts on the polls will be too little or to much or the incriments should be different, whats the big deal...if you don't want to appraise it..then don't...its not set in stone!
Anything is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay, thats what makes the world go around, and thats why we're here. Myself, I visualize the concept of the name, taste in im my mouth for a minute and if its sticky (don't go there!) and I can see me going to the site for something, then I might buy it. Sometimes names that aren't "that great" are good for some sites just so someone else doesn't get it. uh...defense. How many times have we been to a site with a great name to find a crappy site we'll never go back to? How many times have you been to a site with a crappy name that rocks and they go on to make a name for themselves? Its called variety and that is the spice of life, and thats what we want, your variety, your unique appraisal and standpoint from your wealth of knowledge and experience, if we could just be in your shoes, get passionate about what your doing man...Appraise...Appraise...APPRAISE!
I can see where appraising and giving advice might even hurt your own bottom line and I applaud you guys for adding to this forum because without you, there wouldn't be one.
I've checked out most of your sites and I have them bookmarked. They all look great and I am envious and your my rolemodel man!
Even if I am a 39 year old rookie. I own 2 contracting companies and they are on the skids with the dismal economy right now, I'm ready for sept. 12 so the country can move on and get this economy going.

I share your philosophy 100%.

I can't imagine serious appraisers worrying about hurting someone's feelings. And on the flip side, if you post your names for appraisal, don't take it personally if someone tells you your names are crap! If I have crap domains, I'd like to know so!

After a bit, it doesn't seem interesting or useful. The person obviously doesn't know they're buying sucky domains, so...

Even in those grey areas. I imagine sometimes people don't have the time or care to articulate. I like the POLL idea. So, I've posted my first on a poll.

Duck has been reselling for a while now and I have yet to see an acceptable appraisal model.

As noted by scj, we know that an appraisal is subjective.

And, as indicated by scj again, why should I care what anybody thinks my domain name is worth other than a potential buyer? Until the day comes when a buyer seriously wants to buy my domain name, it's nothing more than an empty vessel waiting to be filled, a dream or, more to my way of thinking, an uncut diamond.

However, sometimes when a 'potential' buyer comes along and makes an offer that you are not sure about, a reliable resource for feedback is extremely helpful.

For a few reasons, I have recently stopped my appraisal service, so I can become more active here, without conflict.

If you build this, duck will participate, but duck won't participate in appraisals where resellers just want to 'feel good' about what they just registered. Time is too scarce.

As far as feelings go - If you place a domain name on the appraisal board, be prepared to eat what is served.
