Note that many newspapers and magazines have names exactly like these (e.g., The New Yorker, The Mississippian, The Alabamian). Even my little home town of Roanoke, Virginia... the local magazine is called "The Roanoker". The technical term for this is "geographic adjectival" combined with the definite article.
