And the .US for Today Is....

With all of the news about the U.S. Senate vote approving Kids.US, thought I'd go fishing in the .US pond again today. Here's the one I landed (using an $8 Enom test line with free URL forwarding bait!)

    DailyStar.us

Daily Star is one of the most popular newspaper names in the country - in use by dozens of publications (one of which would probably love to have this domain).

I also think it would be ideal for an internet daily news or celebrity focused site focusing on the U.S. market. Registered in all other extensions of course. Great name that has already been branded! Over 7,000 searched in Overture. How do you like it?

How do any of the dozens of Daily Stars make the millions of dollars that they make each year? They are advertisng-supported news publications (or internet web sites, usually owned by a print newspaper) using a name that is extremely popular worldwide. Check out www.dailystar.com for instance, which is owned by the Arizona Daily Star.

There are no Daily Star trademarks (it can't be trademarked for news use as there are so many of them pre-existing. It is basically a generic name). Just like Gazette which I thought about using for a domain publication I will be doing soon - there are dozens of Gazettes - can't be trademarked.

You can trademark a specifically named Daily Star, for example no one could call their publication the "Arizona Daily Star" - that is trademarked. Daily Star - no problem (you should always check at the government's online trademark registry if you have any doubts about a name you want to register. It is at:

I may be off base here, but I am just wondering. Did you happen to read the post above yours? It would appear not.

Actually, maybe I will just keep this name and call the site the United States Daily Star, and put USA Today out of business!

well i think news.us or newspaper.us or daily.us would great names. seems to me you couldn't get much for it unless the newspaper you sold it to was already called the dailystar. dailystar is okay, i would have much preferred anchorman.us, an amazing name you discovered(also taken in other extensions)....

KidKool - an anchorman is a person not a business. It might make a nice vanity name but that is it. People don't pay much for a vanity name.

DUH! Of course not!! Why would a newspaper called the Gazette want a web site called the Daily Star??! The point that you seem to be missing is that there are dozens of very profitable newspapers called the Daily Star across the U.S. that do not have a web domain called DailyStar.

Don't you think that havng a domain name that was exactly the same as your business name might have just a little bit of value ! That is the WHOLE POINT of your domain name for God's sake!

well i still think it not worth more than $100. most newspapers are not interested in online anymore since there is no money in it.

Yes I can see you are quite the expert on the newspaper business . And really...you have TWO WHOLE YEARS of online news experience!! I've worked in major market newspapers, radio and TV for 30 years - but I apparently never quite got a grip on how the business works. Thanks for enlightening me.

Salon.com has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING. Newspapers make their money from advertising in their print editions. EVERY important newspaper has an online edition. Whether the online edition is making money or not is immaterial at this point - those sites are critical for the newspaper's branding and are are likely to become future profit centers. NO important newspaper is discontinuing their online edition (some are even starting to charge subscription fees to access them).

A web address that matches the business name or objective is crucial to EVERY business. If you do not understand that - then what are you doing trying to register domain names?

Salon never had a print edition generating profits to back them up. Look... This is an Apple (Newspaper)....This is an Orange (Salon & other web only publications). They are not the same thing. Sheesh!

    so what's your point?

if they are the texas daily star they would get texasdailystar.com before "dailystar.us". what makes you think they will pay that much for it? i suppose if it is a school or small town newspaper but i doubt you'll get more than a hundred dollars for it. it would seem to me that all the biggest "daily star" newspapers already have an online presence. the fact that you might "luck out" and sell it in my opinion doesn't give this name any inherent value. it is .us remember we're talking about which may or may not have value in the future so you're speculating on speculation.

Duke, you're almost crossing the line. Watch out

Of course, if you have a good plan, you can make a nice business
with any name. No exception with DailyStar.com. Catchy name.
    Success.

What is it exactly that I am supposed to watch out for? And what line am I almost crossing? Did I miss some profanity or threat somewhere in my post. I just read them again - I don't see them?

Poor Duke! I feel for you...

BTW, Nameprotect.com says there is an "allowed" TM on DAILYSTAR.COM

Would this be a real TM?

    Good luck with the name!

...It's very nice, by the way!

    <<Would this be a real TM?>>

Yes DailyStar.com is a valid trademark (it is owned by the Arizona Daily Star). Probably unnecessary since anyone who did not have the domain would be wasting their time using dailystar.com for anything else - there would be nothing for them to gain. DailyStar.com gives them no rights to DailyStar.net or anytrhing else though. The DailyStar.org for instance is owned by a different newspaper.

Incidently, as to valuation - I made no comment whatsoever about valuation as I have stated a hundred times over that .US names real value are still a few years away from being realized. I have no problem with Kid saying it is a $100 name today...only his failure to understand the business model he is trying to critique (as jh3 noted). It's all Kool though...including the Kid. I like hearing everybody's opinion.
