What was soooo unacceptable and unwarranted in my PM??
"My mannerism serves as proof that I am undoubtedly the lowest species on the food chain?" What's wrong with you?
Do you get a kick out of insulting strangers!
No one else would have found my PM "unacceptable and unwarranted"!
I can't even imagine how those thoughts crossed your mind!
Why didn't you also post what I PM'd you, instead of painting me as you did?
I don't understand your motive! Are you ridiculing me for the attention? Did I say or do something that offended you?
And the rest of you! Damn, you guys were very wrong when appraising my names! 2 days ago I was offered $350 for "provocativedesign.com" by a New York photographer (appraised at $0 by EIGHT of you!)
Am not awaiting any responses. I don't think I will visit this forum again after the way I've been treated the last few days!
This is NOT a friendly community at ALL! (It's a pity. I was prepared to, and could have offered so much)
Thanks to DrWho, and several others, whom left me offensive comments in my messages, I will no longer waste more time here!
sorry to here u leave man dont take shit personal online just say f you and f you and move on
Trip - I'm sorry that your experience has been unpleasant. I really am.
However - if you are going to get this upset over a low appraisal - then perhaps you should find another way to spend your free time - besides domains. The fact is the name 'ProvacativeDesign.com' simply has little resale value. It's a *nice* name - and it could certainly be developed for a web designer - but you are dealing with hardcore resellers who know what they are talking about. The name is good for possible *branding*. Do you know what I am saying?
The fact is that most *brandable* names simply have very little value unless they are developed or have traffic.
This is a hard lesson to learn - but one that every domainer must face eventually.
I wish you the best in your ventures - and I'm sorry you feel that the others treated you unfairly.
Thanks!![]()
Also to tar the entire forum with the same brush is a rather rash thing to do. I mean there are people here who get my back up constantly but I choose to pay no attention to them.
As for appraisals the ones given here are based on the users experience so if they believe that its not worth much then usually it means that based upon their personal appraisal model and past sales they would not rate it very high. this is not an exact science and of course will differ very much to what an end-user may be willing to pay if the name has a specific meaning to them (company name, name of favourite pet etc etc). To quote what an end user "may" be willing to pay would be foolish as it gives false hope to the owner (much like any paid appraisal you will find) by promising sky high prices that you are only going to find if you get the 'perfect' buyer. the prices given here 80% of the time are in fact fair and pretty accurate but in a way you do have a point there are a small number of users who appraise low or $0 regardless of the name simply going off their gut feeling or some other ulterior motives but do as most of the members do ignore them.
stick around for a while and you will soon get to see which of the users here do make big sales weekly and also buy names for more than a few $100 dollars (this group sadly does not include myself) and then take their advice as being more sound than others.
[edit]upon checking the other threads you created I can't comment on the pm issue but some of the people that gave you $0 appraisals are in fact well respected professional domain resellers. and I think you may be a little angry at having the bubble burst for what you envisioned to be top names. it's happened to all of us at some point and is a very useful lesson in buying and selling domains[/edit]

I have mentioned several times that I believe selling domain names is like selling dreams. Sometimes you can find someone that has that dream and you can get a good price for a name. You were lucky to find a photographer that wanted your name (or a good salesman), often it takes a long time to get these results. Often contact comes through the reg details, and this indicates that someone has had an idea for a name (maybe even one that no one else has thought of yet!).
Appraisals on this board don't take account of dreams. They seem to be based mainly on overture results and other stats, and therefore on potential traffic as an undeveloped site. This is in fact the only responsible way to value names as very few people are able to turn dreams into reality.
Remember, just because people appraise your domain at $0, doesn't mean there isn't dumb people out there willing to pay $350 for a domain thats worth $0.
RMF
90% appraisals of the time - appraisals are based almost all on opinion
sure - most people will value a 3 letter com around the same figure but with the average domain appraisals will vary tremendously
it is unfair to say everyone in the forum is not friendly - if you stick around youll find that we are![]()
"worth" is what people are prepared to pay. If a successful NY photographer will pay $350 for a domain, that domain is worth at least $350 to the current owner. Surely the dumb people are the people that can't see any potential in names.Originally posted by RMF

a lot of the time - the price quoted is the resller value - ie. how much that person would pay you for the domain
but how can you tell if there is a successful photographer that will like this specific name? basically you can't which is why appraisals are based on the length, words used, search stats and whatever other little tricks and tips domainers use to gauge a domains qualitys.Originally posted by DomainPairs

I've said this a hundred times - but the best way to get an idea of value when you are having a name appraised -
is to throw out the 'highs' and 'lows' - and look at the 'middle'.![]()
Thanks for taking the time to read my post! And for all the great information! And your friendly, intelligent comments!
I’m new to the domain game and only purchased my first names less than a month ago. Now, I have several. It has become an addiction.
I received two emails asking what I said to DrWho, so here is the exact* PM:
“Is it your honest opinion that these .com's have no real value???
Or are you just jealous!?â€
I meant no offence by my last comment, but interpret it as you will. I think it's harmless, and to take something like that seriously, is not normal.
This is a GREAT forum. I apologize for having previously stated otherwise!
Again, thanks, and you’ll see me around,
Steven
* Minus the domain names only
i dont know how DrWho reacted but i really do think you started it
it isnt polite to pm someone you dont know and stir something up by saying "Are you just jealous!?" just because you didnt agree with the appraisal they gave you
i wouldnt be happy if someone pm'ed me and said something like that
Hey tripstar,
don't let things like this get under your skin. I too am a newbie in the domain trade, in fact I haven't sold even one domain yet, and when I have a GREAT idea for a domain name and post it here all excited, I usually get cold water down my neckand lots of it
It's part of learning and hopefully one day I will get my inner estimators adjusted and be able to judge the name of a domain myself. But until then I will be greatly thankful for the free feedback I get from the folks on this forum and not be doomed to pay ridiculous amounts of money for appraisals that basically tell me the same, just in a more elaborate way.
Fact is, that there is something like good and bad domains. But fact is also that the final price you get for your domains doesn't depend exlusively on that.
In the airline's sky magazines I constantly see domains with hyphens, digits, hugley long ones and all other things normal domainers consider satanic and evilso even the rules that experienced domain-gurus have developed don't always apply (though they are ususally not too wide off).
Domains are worth what the buyer will pay. And if you find the perfect buyer, even a bad domain can make some money.
I've learned this.... Ok, now I am ready to sell my first domain![]()
If eight of the folks say your domain is sh.t, (and they do it ALL the time !![]()
get over it and move on.
BUT
But, why they have the rule to appraise only registered names is beyond me! Twice I have started a thread asking this here("challenging a rule in this forum"), the first time it was moved to the "Suggestions for this forum" section where nobody reads it, and the second time it was deleted alltogether.
By making appraisals in PM before you waste money on bad names, they would become an even more valuable forum. But so far nobody has read the thread where I wrote that
Warm greetings
Reinhard
newbie with cold water down his neck![]()
appraising a domain someone doesnt own is a waste of time in my opinion
when a fellow member appraises a domain they are helping that member out by giving their opinion of the domain![]()
tripstar, I felt like you a few weeks ago. However, I have come to realise that most people her are genuine and are willing to help us newbies. I have found this forum to be very valuable and have learnt alot relating to domains and Hosting.
God Luck![]()
If you leave, don't regret it.
You're not paying to get EIGHT people appraise your name.
You should thank them.
I posted several names for appraisal and end up no response, and I don't blame them. And I sold the names for fairly good price IMO.
Here are domainers forum, and lots of us are reseller.
So, we have many many domains on our hands to keep and speculate.
If you pay every domain you own $350, how many domains can you invest and speculate ? Hence minimize your chance of selling the names because you just have several names. And you must sell each of them $350.
You're very welcome to this forum.
And maybe you want to join Italy trip to know that this community is friendly ?
