Question Whats the future of .us ?

    Hello everybody,

I ran a thread lately that asked to compare all the TLD's.

.us came out pretty badly. Basically the traditionlists liked .com (possibly even .net if beaten with a stick), but nothing else.

The progressive ones had their hopes on .info and .us but gave both only hopes for the future.

So my specific question to .us domains:

Do you think the market for .us will boom?
If so, when, why and how much?
Will it every become a second .com?

I know it's all speculation but a gut-feeling of some of the guru's around here would help me.

    Thanks for your input
    Reinhard

Reinhard , I have gone over this in detail a few times if you search around the board.

.US registration stats are nearly double that of either .Info or .Biz
    on a daily basis.
http://www.whois.sc/internet-statistics/ (of course it's down today..but if you check every day..you see the trend)

Go to the "new" afternic and front page you see whats selling.. .com and .US

    http://afternic.com/

The BIG push will come with the release of Kids.US this summer..

All public educated Kids AND parents ..tens of millions will BY law be introduced to Kids.US

    "SEC. 5. EDUCATION AND OVERSIGHT.

    (a) EDUCATION- The Secretary of Commerce, acting through the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration, shall carry out
a program to publicize the availability of the new domain and to
educate the parents of minors regarding the process for utilizing
the domain in combination and coordination with hardware and
software technologies that provide for filtering or blocking of
unsuitable content. The program under this subsection shall be
commenced not later than 30 days after the date that the new
domain first becomes operational and accessible by the public."

These kids we see the internet as Kids.US ..

these Kids are going to be "imprinted" with .US .. tens of millions ..BY LAW !

The parents already are speaking in favor if this thread is any indication...

    http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/20...1205017612.htm

The main point is whereas most of the US general public (with kids) has never heard of say .Info they will by law be introduced to .US

This is before we even get into the fact that all state governments and state eductiuonal systems already us .US for a variety of websites ....

And even before we get into the fact the .US represents one of the most powerful markets on earth that most major foreign companies want to do business with and will register .US ..the same way that most compnies that want to do business in Germany buy a .DE .. Like http://Ford.DE for example..

And of course you have the patriotic reasons for owning a .US from individual registrations..

Yeah, thats what most of even the proponets are saying but I'll tell you marcope, I think we will see it happening by this summer ..the main rush of registrations and getting sites up simply because of the kids.us ...

It's my view that sudden exposer /education will bring about awarness of the .US space basically overnight in about 100 million US households..

Those "eyeballs" is an enormous amount of traffic in an space (.US) with little competition.. early bird gets the worm kind of thing...

Going to be interesting for certain..

With reg fees down to $5 per name (call in to GoDaddy), it's a lot easier to be a player in the future of .us than not.

I don't think the interest in .us will result in a boom, more of a rollout and conversion. A lot depends on the economy. The net is growing by leaps and bounds, sellers need names, and I see .us as being the TLD of choice in the future.

I prefer .info myself... less parochial, given that my sites have global interest.

However, a site specifically about something in the United States would make sense in .us.

True. It´s just like here in germany. Everything where one would think is located in Germany is searched at website.de , not .com or info or anything. Local market is the keyword. And your market in the US is quite interesting - so I believe .us will become big.

    for me, .us = .info

    I like both equally.

And .com is always the best.

Marco - I like your insight on the .us DN market.

Our outlook is of course very subjective. It is great to have your input here!

I think, like you, that we will be looking at many more .us extrensions, a national market, in the years to come.

The advent of .us is extremely good for the net. It provides US residents with a local domain structure for their country. More importantly it frees .com from US restraints and allows it to expand as the international TLD that it is. I hope that .us will gain in popularity and strength, I am sure that .com will as ir becomes the true web-wide domain.

I wouldn´t have spend 7K in .us domains, unless I would believe in the extension. It´s a gut feeling. But it´s also my observation with the .de market. It´s just natural to search for what you want on the local market. ".coms " are all around the world. If you type-in carworld.com you may not be sure to get a US Dealer. But if you type in carworld.us than you may expect an US Dealership. So - in my opinion .us will undoubtly become very popular !

    Regards, Marco
