    Re: xn--kpr221n.com

it is a very nice domain, congrats.

MAinly because typhoons are very common in Japan and SouthEastern Asia so it could become also an informative site.
    I like it.

If IE7 maintains its support to IDN (Firefox disabled it) it will be surely a $xx,xxx domain

Well there are split opinions on this. The project has been 10 years in the making and its still not really up and running. It would seem, however, that they are now taking off in earnest in Japan, China and Korea. However, here they are being supported by local plug-in for IE 6.0, which won't support gTLDs. That should all change with the release of IE 7.0.

The state of play is that we can even, though inefficiently monetize traffic from Japan using Japanese Google Keywords and Japanese Language advertising. The trickly bit is seeing what they see as Google is now geo-targeted, but you can get round that by using a local anonymous proxy server. The traffic to date does not reflect the local Overture scores we are getting. This either means that they search in Japanese but type-in in English from choice, or their browsers do not support our domains, as yet.

China is bit further behind as there is no significant Adwords on Google there as yet!

Will most American's and Europeans use IDN? Almost certainly not!

Will the vast majority of Asian's use them? Almost certainly yes!

But it is important to remember nearly two thirds of humanity live in Asia!

I agree with Dave on this.
I have a total different project, but IDNs are a great opportunity for everyone

BTW someone should register the Japanese IDN for 'earthquake' if it's available...

    Re: xn--kpr221n.com

Well guys I think I can also shine lite on the subject too.
First off I'm a bilingual American (Japanese & English)
Second I recently moved back to Tokyo, Japan.

I started the other forum because I think I have a better understanding of the Japanese internet market plus I am working now with a pretty good media company in Tokyo. I'm hoping to make pitches to large beverage, & consumer product related companies using IDNs next summer.

So will IDNs take off here & what will it take?

Actually it just takes one pretty famous brand or person to start a trend in Tokyo.

To answer some previous questions the term is pronounced tie-foo or "taifoo" Japanese do not do searches in English. Do not kid yourself or let anyone persuade you into thinking they do.

The target for IDNs relating to Asia is to think about the common person in Japan, China, or Korea etc. They don't speak English & function everyday totally in Japanese: reading, writing, speaking.

As I showed Dave for people who aren't Japanese speakers using the OVT Japan tool let's you see how common a certain term is. For me it let's me see how many times a certain targetted term I want is searched or gives a suggestion for other related terms that might actually might be more commonly searched.

Well, I tried registering a dot JP IDN earlier this week just to see whether they had more traffic than dot com IDN.

I encountered two problems. The first was the mechanics of getting a good price on an English Interface. The Japanese can get them for about $80 but we end up paying anything up to $200 dollars. I found a Enom retailer with a good price about $90 and tried to register a domain with high Overture. After 2 days it came back saying invalid. Enom register dot JP but not in Japanese. How is that for joined up thinking US style.

The other problem that I encountered is, that although we could register terms with ease in dot com at $8, at $80 plus for a dot JP they are just about sold out!

Both sceptics I am afraid. Toho either doesn't want us speculating on his patch or he is passing up a God given opportunity.
