I bought a ".io" domain about a year ago, and it's coming up for renewal soon
at a whopping $100/yr. It's the only such domain I own, mostly I have
.com, .net, .info, .us and some .pro's
I reg'd this .io domain because I found a keyword that is particularly
strong with the suffix "I/O", and which gets a lot of search engine searches.
My assumption was that people could search for the <keyword> and when
they saw <keyword>.io in the SERP they would tend to click it because
it sounds so good and makes so much sense.
When I search for the <keyword> in google, I see a lot of hits, but I don't
see <keyword>.com or <keyword>.net, I see something like
http : // <some domain>.com / blah_blah_keyword / ... and stuff like that.
So I thought maybe would good content I could top the SERP for that keyword.
If I renew this expensive domain it wouldn't be for resale value or anything
but probably just for ad revenue based on an unusually high number of clicks
based on SERP (the keyword is searched for many millions of times a month).
I'm trying to get an idea of the potential profitability, but $100 is a lot of
money for renewal, and obviously downsides.
Any thoughts or things I should consider in this decision?
Thanks!
Yes, renew it.
$100 a year? Does it get any traffic? Make any money? How many .io's are registered? Is the extension well marketed/recognized in India or surrounding areas?
No way would I renew it unless it's one hell of a name *and* the above questions are all positive.
