400,000 .mobi Domain Names Now Registered

"DUBLIN, Ireland and WASHINGTON, March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- dotMobi, the company behind the first and only Internet address designed specifically for mobile phones, today announced more than 400,000 .mobi domains have been registered in 104 countries since the domain's launch in October 2006. As a comparison, only 100,000 .com domain names were registered in the first ten years of that domain's existence."

Allthough the figures are very impressive, the comparison is rather warped due to the fact that when .com's were intro'd their was not the influx of domain investors grabbing all they could get their hands on in those days.
The true meat & veg of .Mobi will be evident if and when dotMOBI decide to police sites for their useage rules and sites are confirmed as developed or developing.

ANY new TLD will do go today ANY and that is because of the success of .com and because of .com sales. If Men.com never sold some years ago this point would be moot. There always has to be a forerunner and for those jumping in the .mobi pile and neglecting .com are the ones I feel sorry for.

I'll bash media because it biased and ignorant. To compare .com with .mobi is a pointless exercise. If you read they article it appears as if they are saying .mobi did what .com couldn't do in ten years and that's inaccurate. Also, do all these registrations point to a need for mobile content as the article states?
"The growing number of .mobi registrations illustrates that content developers are focused on delivering quality sites and applications to mobile phones."

I'll bet all my .mobi's that over half the registrations are just domainer's waiting to cash in and have no intention of developing the names. Think I am wrong or is the article? Majority of us, as far as I am aware will not develop but invest. That is why .eu, .mobi, and all new ext's will have a goldrush but these goldrushes will not put .com in a worse position? They all fill a need and when the dust settles there's plenty of room at the table for all of these.

I don't bash individuals portfolios either, there is no point in that and Doc Com made a good point about diversity which is why I own some .mobi. We all need to breed a little caution in regurgitating an article that we in here all know is incorrect or biased. I think too many newbies will jump on ship that they think has set sail when they need more information to make an informed decision. .eu was once a great new thing, IDN's were awesome, now .mobi. I own some of all of them but let's be clear I would trade all of them for better .com's. Cheers,

luckily only bought like 5 .eu's, (would never touch idn's lol) , did'nt get involved with .cc,.ws & all that jazz.
did get involved with .info pleased to say.
basically , just my own thing, only touch tlds & my own country cctld.
in short, a lot of people didn't get involved with mobi. their choice, cool.
many i fear didn't because they got burnt so many times before on 'the next extension just wheeled out'.
so much so, they were blinkered a little on mobi.
i have confidence in this extension.
it's old ground we keep covering. i'm very happy for the people that are not involved with mobi, even happier for the people that are.
important to remember before we have another 'black & white' lol, debate, that it is possible to buy & sell .com & .mobi & develop both.
i do, & many others too.

One difference with stocks is that another person can own the same as you, but with domain names, there is only one registrant for all 6 billion people, Internet Real Estate folks.. we are the pioneers, still..
