The executives at Walt Disney Co. must be doing handstands. Jonas Brothers fans turned up in droves Friday night. The premiere of "Camp Rock" on Disney Channel averaged 8.9 million viewers.
"Camp Rock" becomes the No. 2 most-watched movie premiere in the channel's history, the channel announced Saturday.
"High School Musical 2" averaged 17.2 million when it debuted last August on Disney Channel. But, of course, that sequel had millions primed to tune in. The original "High School Musical" drew 7.8 million when it premiered in January 2006.
"Camp Rock" becomes the No. 1 entertainment show on cable in the 2007-08 TV season.
Disney Channel was also the No. 1 network from 8 to 10 p.m. Runner-up CBS averaged 5.8 million in the same time slot.
"Camp Rock" has the potential to become a far bigger event this weekend. The movie will repeat at 8 p.m. Saturday on ABC and at 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC Family.
Oh, and the movie should make the popular Jonas Brothers trio even hotter. Brace yourself, parents, for requests for Jonas Brothers merchandise.
