For the life of me, I can not see anyone seaching iPhones.mobi on anything. Makes no sense to me.

Sub domain? perhaps. But they don't index well.

Wow, don't mean to insult too much but we are getting into some big words...extrapolate.

As for looking for things on a phone, you may have to contact espn and find out from their folks why people were hitting espn.mobi from their phones for basketball updates more than ALL of espn.com!

In relation to your other examples, you would have to ask the dumbasses that regged popcans.mobi and paperplates.mobi if they were the same dumbasses that regged popcans.ca and paperplates.ca and I really hope that wasn't you.
