    dotMobi's response to the iPhone...

That's supposed to be "response," sorry, I can't type
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    http://dotmobi.typepad.com/

I'm not sure what to make of it, but I'd like to hear what both sides have to say. Let's keep it clean. No screaming and punching, please

Re: dotMobi's repsone to the iPhone...

i think they stated the obvious in the best way they could... that a device cannot make a TLD obsolete.

some people still think .mobi is trying to be a type of technology, when really it is just a type of association, sorta like what the original TLDs really meant..

.com for companys, .net for networks, and .org for organizations

and now, .mobi for mobile devices...

Re: dotMobi's repsone to the iPhone...

I'm on board with .mobi, but Pierce's reasoning her seems a little empty to me.

Pretty much, I believe he is saying, people will type .mobi just because they are accessing on a mobile device...that is what I would hope for, but the iphone making it cool to access websites on the mobile device does not make it cool to type in .mobi instead of .com...escpecially if the .com comes up well on the device. If I phone was on board with .mobi...that would be a different story.

    Am I reading this wrong?

If the extention is never marketed right, NOBODY will type in .mobi..... that would be like getting people to type in .coop

People arnt going to just guess words like 'RingTones' and decide to put .mobi in front of it...

i think some people are getting the wrong idea with this..... there isnt going to be a day where everyone just types .mobi because they heard its the thing to do, the internet has years and years behind it.. and years and years of websites and companies.. that doesnt all just disappear because the saviour .mobi came along.

Re: dotMobi's repsone to the iPhone...

I'm sure the voices from Iphone's announcement galvanized dot Mobi that the time to act in fuller force is now; while techonology with low end phones can further ignite the .Mobi brand name popularity (but it's not solely dependent on that). Remember, currently only, there are four to one cellphones to computer desktops.. and this is worldwide.. mostly lower end phones.

So if the .com can be seen in full version now on a PDA.. that means .Mobi's usefulness, alongside the advent of a phone that can see a whole site, lies much in the reinforced notion that the .coms need to be preserved in full info version for access by a capable mobile device (with no forced mobile redirect on the .com). With preserved .coms now, that leaves .Mobi as the vehicle for "device detect and redirect" for every and any type of device. The apple Iphone announcement and its technological implications for tomorrow may have been a blessing in disguise for DotMobi's rise from infancy. Or maybe their coming out party was planned all along this way..

    Look at CES..

The DotMobi representative has cited a good point, not to underestimate the power of a nickname on the masses' mentality..

.COM - is it evolving to: COMputer desktop from "company"? (since many domain extensions are companies as well..)

.MOBI - MOBIle "on the go" for phones, PDAs, and upwards - mid size screens, laptops, etc.

But to have dotmobi as a household name timely.. business promotion and usage is paramount. Now, the focus turns heavily to the corporate dotMobi consortium and the business networking success it can bring. Now, not only China, the focus of DotMobi must be to finally hit the United States hard, as the business superpower is a prime target to flip the mainstream with dotMobi awareness.. and with the corresponding announcement of 58 domain names to be auctioned soon by sedo.. the Iphone and CES may have kickstarted the corporate marketing blitz campaign 2007. The strengths of DotMobi lie in its business relationships.. if business .mobi site usage is out there in commercials and in the internet, then the public will catch on even faster..

Remember, Dot Mobi will always be around.. the question many of us wonder about is how high can this really go.

I think dotmobi has the potential to spread virally.. as it has done already on a smaller scale already since its inception 14 weeks ago only. Now let's see what moves the DotMobi business consortium can do.

Re: dotMobi's repsone to the iPhone...

The way I see what hes saying is -
1 Apple is going to get people to start using the web from their phones, and think they are cool for doing it
2 .mobi content will be more optimal for people on their phones than .com
3 Viola - people will start typing .mobi because every time they type .mobi into their phone they have a more pleasant user experience designed towards them on their phone.

Personally I think that zoom feature is going to get real annoying and sites with content made for mobiles much more attractive. As a standard place to find such content .mobi still sounds promising.

    People are already doing this.

The iphone selling point is - and this is from the apple website - "With its advanced Safari browser, iPhone lets you see any web page the way it was designed to be seen" .

ie. no compression, juggling the layout, removing images or making a 'lite' version.

People want their PC web in their pockets.

A lot of people seem to agree:

The Nokia N770 "internet tablet" (800*480 res) was far more successful than Nokia anticipated; they had to ramp up manufacturing quickly to meet demand. The successor N800 has just been released - obiously there is demand for mobile "PC web" browsing.
always buying domains with type-in traffic. all tlds.

Re: dotMobi's repsone to the iPhone...

Add me to those that think this destroys the mission of mobi. While it's still a valid extension that can be used for mobile pureplays the new mobile devices coming in the next 2-3 years will make the standards of mobi useless.

Their entire mission is based on viewable mobile compliant sites for devices. When technology gets past this within 18 months then what will be the purpose of mobi? And will 18-24 months be enough time to brand and convince the public to use it? I am extremely doubtful of this.

mTLD made the mistake of putting themselves out there as a new standard...not just simply a TLD. A "standard" isn't what mobi will be in 2 years and that's what some domainers have banked on.

Mobi's mission is now irrelevent and I don't see how they can alter themselves to fix this and push forward. The blog response was pathetic and it shows their ultimate weakness...technology. They can't stop it.

    Ok, ill play....

so if .mobi caught on and then suddenly in 18-24 months the standard is 'useless' would people stop using it?

    people havnt stopped using .net

oh wait, there is no standard on .net... and i bet anyone but domainers doesnt even care or know about this..

THEY (the public) would just see it as a TLD... a tld that denotes "mobile site"

Wrong. That is not their mission at all... mobile CONTENT is what theyre after.. it should be a GIVEN that the site is VIEWABLE in ANY tld.. if its not viewable, i dont want to visit it.
