If so, does CSS@media work reliably? I found some info that some of the mobile browsers are not css compliant and will render css based on "screen" as opposed to "handheld". However the info was 2 years old.

It would be nice to service all visitors with the same database driven content & just remove some of the bells & whistles on the mobile.css.

I am not a natural born coder - so forgive me if the question is silly.

^ figured this out. I think....

...for mobile sites load mobile.css as default & use javascript to detect browser width >750 then load screen.css. My new phone is coming in next week. I'll test it then.
If i got you correct, .mobi specifications using xHTML will NOT serve all mobile devices, I would say that you are correct. In Japan, where i live and work as a mobile website developer, NTT DoCoMo uses cHTML and xHTML. But if you use RUBY ON RAILS, it will work.

Thanks for the info. I had been looking at drupal simply because I am more familiar with that cms. I'll take a look at Ruby on Rails as well. I see Ruby supports url aliases which is important.

What I am actually looking to do is serve a mobi compliant style sheet as on the .mobi sites and load a more elaborate style sheet upon detection of a non-mobile or a wider screen without maintaining a script to identify each device/browser. The answer to this seems to be using js to determine screen width. It seems logical to me to "brand" the site only once & still be able to serve both audiences.

When it comes to domains, this is the only industry where anyone can become an instant and supreme expert by merely registering just 1 name.

Um, some of us have been doing this for a while. i have been working in Japan as a mobile developer for 5 years. So this means that i am an expert and have been waiting to get these names. Kinda like accessorizing.

Not to worry, we will all help out each other! You may know something i dont!

I agree with you on that. That would be the most reasonable way of doing that. Will you be targting worldwide or just in your country?

my comment was based on how this thread started and not as a reply to the last post. in this industry everyone has an opinion. at the end of the day it all boils down to that 1 sale. if ever that happens. for every 1 sale there are thousands of domains languising unsold and /or dropped. even the guy who never sold a single domain has an opinion.

far as .mobi goes, so many registrations are done with a .com mentality in mind. mobile users will simply not get accustomed to typing long names or names that has no practical use while on the road. there may be very few exceptions

.mobi will be used only for the most practical applications and sites. even though it is a 1 word domain, why would i use something like intellectuals.mobi beats me?

we can say all and what we want. time will tell....

Mostly the US. I have a fair number of .mobis I could develop with this same method. It is easier for me to build/monetize for a US audience.

    Thanks again for the pointers!
