In regard to Pool's .mobi auctions, I have seen several .mobi's go for the high xxx to the mid xxxx range.
That's alot of $$$ for this newbie extension.

99% of the names are worthless.
1% of them could end up being extremely valuable if it takes off. Those small core of names include generic News, Travel, Weather, Phone Stuff (like ring tones, and games). And by "takes off" I mean all the wireless companies forcing people to use it.
I think video related .mobi domains will be hot...

The thing is people, it's a new domain, you have got to give everything a go! I've taken a possible $4000 gamble, but hey you got to speculate to accumulate! Now if i can make $10 more on each domain then thats my job successfully completed, but i don't think calling the .mobi a waste of space is the correct thing to do just yet! I bet the same discussions were going on years ago for other successful domains such as the .de! I bet NONE of you saw that coming! According to sedo its the 2nd best selling (correct me if i'm wrong) domain name in the industry. But i do admit looking back i wished i hadn't regged some of the .mobi's i have but thats life, and thats what happens when you've had a few beers too many armed with a creditcard!

Awesome!
I happen to HAVE a PalmTreo PDA thats has internet access, and I carry it wherever I go. .MOBI is global, most people in third world countries don't have a desktop they have a cellphone!
Now with that said, the internet is not about only going to google.com or google.mobi, its about going to mom and pops site, a free platform for all, for budding sites (freedom); unfortunately, If you have a PDA you know, most of these valuable mom and pop sites are NOT optimized for the PDA screen with wap2.0 etc. With .mobi it is more power to the people because they know it fits on the PDA screen!
I know some phone carriers were against it but don't you know that they have a business interest to say so! They want you to keep paying for phone calls whereas the internet, boosted by .mobi and the evolving of phones to PDA's, has the capability to make phone calls for free eventually! The phone carriers will become ISP's! Of course all the cell phone MANUFACTURERS are all for it!
Remember cellphones (and .mobi) are global, travel to Africa and Asian and Latin American countries and know most people don't have a computer for many reasons! IT's all about the cellphone evolving to PDA and naturally getting cheaper. The internet is for all 6 billion people, so don't just look around where you live and judge the .mobi; remember these are all your potential customers.

interesting, the cellphone evolving to PDA...
.mobi will instantly tell someone 'you can see this site on your mobile'
with other extensions .com, .net, etc, you either have to hope to get lucky, or they have to do more to get the message across that the site is viewable on mobile
seems quicker to just use .mobi if you have mobile content to offer, instead of expending the extra time to explain that it's a mobile compliant site

.com will always be king
.mobi will always be a waste of money (except in a few cases such as the examples NameYourself posted)
That's what I call a high-risk investment. Well if it's only 5% of your portfolio I would say you are leveraging the risk responsibly :greensmilewinkgrin:
But I am really wondering how many names will be dropped in one year.
Well .de is a country TLD like 200+ others. Popularity is not relevant, IMO each ccTLD has a raison d'être.
The problem is, .mobi has none...
NameNewsletter.com - free lists of available domain names
ZoneFiles.net (beta) - ccTLD and gTLD droplists
see this is where i see things differently ... .mobi is trying to differentiate itself as the standard to the 'mobile internet' contrary to .com (which i still love), .net, .info, .org, etc.. The mobile internet will be different than the pc/laptop internet and the user will expect a different type of experience - quick, current, to the point and directly related to the limitations of the small screen (phone, pda, psp whatever).
I know if it were as easy to do my online shenanigans from my phone in a mall, at the park or at a buddy's house I would, and wil. I actually look forward to NOT having to sit here at my desk, upstairs in the bedroom, while my wife is making dinner downstairs (and yes I have a wireless router and laptop, but a virus recently ate it). Most of the things I hop on the internet for are exactly what the mobile internet will excell at ... is that domain i potentially thought of available, who won the game, am I leading in fantasy football, what happened with that senator guy, did i hear that intel bought lightstream... if I can do these types of things, on the go, more easily with the mobile internet then I will embrace it.

nah, there is plenty to go around.. i have around 80, so if .mobi ever does anything other than pass us by like most new tld's do, i have a nice list.. and if it doesnt ever do anything, well we all lost out.
I think we will all have to sit tight and at least wait for the premium auction to kick off to see what money people/companies are prepared to shell out, then we should find out wether it's sink or swim!

I thought "dot what?" is the most usual/normal question.
a little bit funny, but it's true
That's soo freaking true and that's why I'm doing my bet on spanish domains.
In the city I live, even maids and building workers have cells.
I've seen people in the collective bus through the window, talking with cell phones better than mine!
They don't have a car, they don't have computer, but they have a damn pretty cool cell phone !
