Priceline.com(R) (Nasdaq: PCLN) announced today the launch of a suite of mobile services that enable travelers with Web-enabled wireless devices to search hotel inventories, pricing and availability in real-time, book rooms, check the status of their flights, and see recommended restaurants and local attraction reviews from Zagat Survey, LLC.
"We believe these enhancements make priceline.com one of the leading wireless services providers in the online travel space," said priceline.com's Chief Marketing Officer Brett Keller. "Many priceline.com customers are last-minute travelers who need the ability to check live hotel inventories, book their rooms in real-time and check their flight status while on the road. In addition, Zagat Survey's restaurant and attractions reviews provide unique, valuable content that can't be found on any other major online travel service."
Travelers can access priceline.com's mobile services in two ways. When accessed through a Web-enabled wireless device, www.priceline.com will automatically route visitors to the special wireless home page. Travelers can also access priceline.com's mobile services, by wireless device or computer, by visiting www.priceline.mobi.
Priceline's mobile features include:
-- Search Hotels. Allows customers to search live, real-time hotel inventories and pricing by city and date. Once the desired hotel is located, customers can click on a link to be connected to Priceline's telephone booking service for hotels.
-- Book Travel. Provides an easy connection to Priceline's telephone booking services for hotel rooms, air & hotel vacation packages and cruises.
-- Flight Status. Automatically connects to the mobile flight status pages for American, Northwest, United and US Airways. Provides links that customers can use to dial flight status phone numbers for most major domestic and international airlines.
-- Zagat-Rated Restaurants. Allows visitors to view highlights of Zagat-Rated restaurants by city. Each restaurant is accompanied by address, phone number, average price and Zagat's signature numerical rating of its Food, Decor and Service.
-- Zagat-Rated Attractions. Allows visitors to view highlights of Zagat-Rated attractions by city. Each attraction is accompanied by address, telephone number, cost (if any), and Zagat's signature numerical rating of its Appeal, Facilities and Service.
-- Customer Help. Provides e-mail and telephone links to Priceline customer service for hotels, vacation packages and cruises.
-- Download Goodies. Offers downloadable ringtones and wireless device wallpaper from priceline.com's current Negotiator TV commercials, starring William Shatner.

The Los Angeles Times has run an article about Priceline.mobi....

Priceline.com goes mobile, priceline.mobi
Priceline.com has cloned its own Mini-Me. But unlike Dr. Evil’s tiny sidekick in “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” the Internet travel seller plans to do good.
The news: Priceline on Thursday launched a scaled-down version of its website for Web-enabled wireless devices. You can’t yet book online or bid for travel at www.priceline.mobi, the best-known service of Priceline, but you can do a lot of other stuff: search for hotels, cruises and trip packages, view restaurant ratings, check your flight’s status and book travel by phone. You can also access e-mail and telephone links to Priceline’s customer service.
“As they travel the country, a lot of people need to add hotels on the way,” Brett Keller, Priceline’s chief marketing officer, explained. So instead of heading for an Internet cafe or switching on your laptop (oops, you forgot it?), you can search for sleeps on your PDA, which will automatically route you to the mobile website.
Stumped about where to eat? You can call up Zagat Survey’s ratings of restaurants in the city you’re visiting but not, as yet, full reviews. Keller said Priceline plans to add reviews in the next week or so. But don’t expect to do online bookings or bidding on the wireless site anytime soon. Keller said the company wants to see how popular the site is before adding features.

Priceline, RBC, who next?
The avergage Joe Public is going to be seeing a lot of .mobi this year, which will reinforce the .mobi = mobile thinking that .mobi needs to succeed. Just like what happened with .com when the internet first started.
Anyone can honestly say that next to .com, the .mobi extension is used (and advertised) most meaningfully now by the biggest corporations in the world. The .mobi is becoming (or already is) the preferred domain extension for business mobile sites.
Almost two years old now, the .mobi extension really can't be argued to be irrelevant or meaningless anymore, unless you want to ignore all the e-commerce mobi sites that have, and continue to be, announced on a regular basis.
.mobi has made it!
The next phase will be to see many of the bloggers who previously trashed .mobi do an about-face, or at least remain silent on the issue. To continue to say .mobi is a useless extension and will flame itself out is just denying the obvious now.
