If you are new to domains and looking to buy, sell and learn about domains then you have come to the right place. DNForum is the largest domain name community on the internet and continues to grow every day. There are over 105,000 domainers on DNForum doing everything from buying domains, selling domains, learning about domains and discussing domains. Take a minute and Register.
Register Today on DNForum IT'S FREE!mTLD has published all the applications for the Premium Generic names last month. Applications for SEX.mobi, MP3.mobi, HOTELS.mobi, etc. After seeing this list of companies investing in dotmobi, I have some conclusions:
1.
A lot of the names are ‘TM defensive’. Companies like Materfoods, Creative, BAT and MINI will not develop an interactive .mobi site is my guess.
With only 108 applications, for 100 terms, out a list of 5,617 premium names, the application process is not very successful. Ok, the rules were very strictly (click here for the rules). You had to use the TM for at least five years in good faith, etc. A single ‘Premium Name Expert’ will decide if the application is eligible or not.
2.
Only someone tried to get his hands on the most valuable domain for dotmobi: SEX.mobi. The application was done by Marcus R. Schatte who also owns Sex.biz (for sale @ sedo…). However, his application was not eligible. Good for .mobi, because he would probably park it…
3.
HOTELS.mobi will definitely not be owned by Hotels.com inc. (as a sunriser) Their application was not eligible. The application for HOTEL.mobi is still pending. However, there is a realistic chance that also this application is not eligible, because their TM for ‘Hotel’ is not at least five years used.
HOTELS.mobi has one other applicant, DreamInvest from Belgium. This application is still pending, but his TM also is not used at least five years is my guess. The applicant is also the owner of the developed websites Hotels.be, Restaurant.eu, Restaurants.eu, RESTO.mobi, and many others.
4.
Two big USA Sports teams, The RAIDERS and the SAINTS applied for their dotmobi’s. I bet they will develop nice website’s on these domains! LiveScores, PayTV…?
5.
Two applications for SUN.mobi are both considered eligible. TheSun (UK Newspaper) and Sun Microsystems now have to wait and see who will be the lucky owner… Both companies have also registered other dotmobi’s: TheSun.mobi and SunMicrosystems.mobi…
6.
Also two applications for DIAMOND.mobi are both considered eligible. This will be the battle between diamond.co.uk and diamond.com, the two applicants.
7.
With four different parties trying to get their hands on YELLOWPAGES.mobi, this is the most wanted “Premium Sunrise Domain”.
8.
TimeWarner, parent of AOL and the world's first fully integrated media and communications company, applied for seven (!) dotmobi's, PEOPLE, LIFE, GOLF, MONEY, TIME, SKI and SKIING
9.
Dutch ‘Royal’ Phone company KPN won’t get their two applications. This very big Dutch Company also tried to get several dotEU domains last year, but made big mistakes with their applications then and got not all their TM’s. History repeating?
10.
CINEMA.mobi is applied for by VGM.de, a German Media company. They have a magazine called CINEMA. They also registered TvToday.mobi and TVspielfilm (and typo TVspielfim.mobi !) during the normal sunrise. These are their other magazines. I wonder what they will do with the USA traffic, because ‘cinema’ is a German Magazine.
11. Last but definitely not least – In General
Some very important dotmobis – those that can create a sparkle – will be owned by companies that will create important websites. Not only information websites, but interactive, download and / or booking websites.
MP3.mobi -> I expect Thomson, will make a great MP3 website
SAINTS.mobi and RAIDERS.mobi -> This is not only TM protection. They can make big $$$ with these domains. Tickets, Downloads, PayTV…
SH0P.mobi -> Will we be able to buy anything we want ‘mobile’ soon with this experienced company owning this domain?
YellowPages.mobi -> Within a few months you will probably be able to make a Yellow Page search on your mobile!
Because of the fact that the best names will go to auction or RFP, we will see some interesting news next year(s) after the allocation of:
SEX.mobi
CASINO.mobi
GAMES.mobi
GAMBLING.mobi
PORN.mobi
VIDEO.mobi
PHONE.mobi
MUSIC.mobi
LOTTO.mobi
Every time when one of these names – and there are hundreds others – will be allocated the news will be pretty heavy. And also great: the big money that will be gained with these ‘super premium’ auctions, will they spend on awareness campaigns.

Interesting stuff...Only 108 applications? I suspect that many people didn't think they had a chance (for example, me)

Thats some good research WEBecri! Have you ever considered working for DNjournal?? LOL
Seriously though, it's looking good, some big companies there and one i was quite impressed with was the sun newspaper! What better advertisment could there be for a .mobi on the pages of a popular UK tabloid newspaper! Just imagine "The latest royal sex scandal! Find out more from from your mobile at sun.mobi!!"
That would be the start of it in the UK i reckon! All it will take is them to publish one exclusive and utilising the mobile to get the news and thats the UK in the know about .mobi's existance!!!!
Superb article and industry look on the inside. Thanks for sharing!
Hotels.mobi = top opportunity

Why wasnt it eligible ? I dont see any problem with it.Only someone tried to get his hands on the most valuable domain for dotmobi: SEX.mobi. The application was done by Marcus R. Schatte who also owns Sex.biz (for sale @ sedo…). However, his application was not eligible.
