What if I wanted to access a full blown site on my PDA and it redirected me to mobile

That is what .com is for..

I think dot mobi is a shortcut for the user to know it is fitting for the small mobile screen, I don't think the world will wait for all websites to make a mobile site redirect anyway.

On the flip side, what if I wanted to access a full blown site with scroll on my mobile device and I was REDIRECTED to a shorter content version on my mobile. That is what .com is for..

(This thought is for people who say "why can't you have a .com detect your mobile device and redirect you"?)

I might be in some resort somewhere and need to use features on fully blown site.. but if the world standard was, not .mobi, but a .com redirect then I wouldn't be able to do that mobile.

    This is the flipside..

Whereas .mobi can be accessed by computer, the .com fully blown site needs to be accessible by mobile as well.

    Regards,

Personally, I'm designing all of my sites for 176 x 220 pixel screens - motorola razr phone size. In the future I may go bigger to whatever resolution is most popular. But definitely always smaller than 640x480 - imho what .mobi was made for. Sites optimized for a small screen.

In the future .com's will be made to be looked at on your home computer or even your big screen TV, and will be made for higher and higher resolutions.

.mobi will be formated for screens that can fit in your pocket.

I agree. I have built a couple of sites for the RAZR, and have kept my graphics to a max of 168 px wide. They also work on the candy bar "Chocolate" phone and still look fine on my BlackBerry Pearl.

I, too, believe .mobi will be most successful for phones that fit in a pocket.
