I would say 400-500 words, but I don't think there is a definitive answer.

dcristo is right. 400 - 500 words per page is a good choice for many reasons: people don't like long scrolling pages, google loves bigger sites, each page with its own set of keywords & title, more page interlinking opportunities.

Enough for the user, not google... You don't want to bore them, do you? Long if interesting and informative, short otherwise.

Thanx for the info, it's made me re-think a design. I have a few pages (articles)that are rather long, I should cut them into smaller pages, and at the bottom of each one, onto page 2 etc..)

Good advice on the 500 word mark. If you have longer articles you may want to cut them into parts. Linking them together will give you more pages views if the content is worth reading.

You can also try breaking up larger articles with subheaders that use <h> tags. My understanding is that Google reads those tags as important (but feel free to correct me if I'm not 100% on that.)
