Hiring webmasters need help

I find that almost all of my content writing gigs have had one thing in common: either people commissioning the work that want too much (guaranteed top google rank, instant success) from articles, or have no idea how to hire what they want. They just feel they can say anything and what they want will come out of the computer.

Why can't hiring webmasters wanting to buy content follow accountable rules for hiring content? I have probably let 70% of my past clients relationship lapse because they were simply too difficult to deal with.

Opinions?

Re: Hiring webmasters need help

It happens in every field related to the internet. It's due to the largely misunderstood nature of the net and what people read and expect. Simple thing is, don't accept work from clients like that.

Re: Hiring webmasters need help

lol, I agree. I have a large client base, mainly content authoring but some other writing too, and the one thing you can guarantee is that they want conditional writing. Don't get me wrong, a world in which you could go to a car sales room and say, 'OK I'll buy the Ferrari, on condition that I all of the Spice girls begging to fulfill my every desire" sounds great, but not likely to happen is it! Likewise, when certain clients email me with a job of; '600 words on the social and economic downfall of Russia. Oh and can you make it so we will convert 70% of the visitors into paying clients for our carbonated soft drinks'. They honestly have no idea. Be firm with them and tell them they can either have a great piece, or they can have a piece which will be weak, and not really to the point.

Remember, you ARE the talent, they are NOT, which is WHY they are looking to hire a pro!
