Yes... Yahoo Directory is one of only two places that Google's Webmaster Guidelines specifically recommends:
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=35769
"Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites."
I've never seen a site get rejected, but I've only submitted quality sites. (e.g., Don't submit a scraper site or a parked domain.)
You don't need to add yourself to the Yahoo Directory to get high rankings, but I think that it is worth the $300.

Great question!, First I would like to know where the heck the Yahoo directory is? There was a time it dominated Yahoo's home page, but no more, I cant even find a link to it, I have a few domains in the Yahoo directory but they receive little traffic, I thought about paying the $300 to list mine, but if visitors are not directed to the directory, what good is it?
I feel like I'm missing something here ???
Yahoo Directory:

The benefit is that Yahoo directory is human edited. That means that Google can read it and determine that the sites have been approved by a human.
The benefit is not in direct traffic, just SEO.

If it's a good site and the revenue justifies it, then go for it!

It's one of the best links you can get pointed to your site, especially if it's a new site. Get in Y! directory, and get in DMOZ, and you have a nice start.
Always buying quality websites
I'd say its a good idea, something I should think about...
ok thanks you for your comments. just reply some comment that raider pointed out.
"How does a visitor find your link in the directory from the Yahoo main page?...That's what I'm getting to."
SEO is long run, it helps you getting top rank in google, yahoo or msn when user type in a keyword say "domain name registration" (for a new site to have this keyword rank high is really hard). so buy submitting your website to some authority site (in the thread's example) it's yahoo. your website can eventually rank higher and when some want to register your domain and found your site in top ranking, they will look at it and see what's good about your site and eventually your site got traffic or sales conversion.
Depends on your marketing budget but I think there are better ways to spend $300 IMHO.
I ask this question to myself when deciding. Does the website in question have any rankings in Yahoo ? If yes, what positions am I at ? A Yahoo Listing does positively help "some" rankings. So, if you do more then $3000 per year on Internet Marketing for your website, make this $295 a part of it.

I'm giving you the link to a list of free directories that REALLY will add some traffic to your site.
One of mine went from 1-5 visitors per day to 100+per day in around 4-6 weeks. It was never Alexa ranked until about 3 weeks ago it finally showed. I checked today and it's even ranked a little better.
I hope it continues to rank better and it helps you get some quality traffic.
