PHPFox i reckon.
i use phpfox for a site which has 400 members, great support team and a great software.. updates every few weeks..
Also take a look at Joomlapolis, a Joomla community plugin
can anyone compare social engine and php fox whats better
i find social enzines user interface more presentable than fox'ex
how about the support and else
Joomla + Community Builder (Joomlapolis) is the cheapest and most extensive system I've tested. - there is a cost to CB for the guide, the software/script is free and open source.
It has a lot of features out of the box with a ton of plugins that allow it to be extended to whatever is required, specially when you can addon even non cb components into Joomla itself.
Social engine seems pretty good too from the demo's.
I still believe dolphin are the best although social engine if you want a facebook type of site but stick with dolphin if you want your site to look different from the rest ;-)
I've looked at lots of the social networking scripts. Most of the scripts are too buggy for my taste and support is poor. I decided, for the time being to go with a white label of Corank (for a Digg-like script). So far my experiences have been positive. It is still to early to say for sure. I am only getting about 700 visitors a day (it has been up for a few days at LINKS), and really hasn't been stress. But I am hopeful. The platform is reliable and support is decent - though sometimes it takes a while to get a question answered. They really need a forum.
As a result of this positive experience, I am going to try out KickApps. These hosted forums are the quickest way to get a reliable social network up and running, but they do have the big disadvantage that the host owns the data. I am using CNAME to get a decent url (links.links.com) to reflect my own domain, Links.com.
We'll see what happens over time. I would appreciate any feedback from anyone else who is working on building similar sites.

Rich

In the KickApps faq it doesnt say they own the content
Ok it will be hard to get it out of there but you own itWho owns my community's media and member information? You do! KickApps provides Hosting and management tools, but your members and content belong to you. KickApps will not distribute or share your content with other websites without your permission.
Hi there,
That is pretty much what I meant. If I put a great deal of effort in building a site, I could lose everything if something happens to KickApps, or my relationship with KickApps. If there is a way to create a export of the data, I have not yet found it. If anyone knows of a way, I would appreciate it. Possession is 99% of the law.![]()
Thanks for your comment.

Dolphin developers are too busy coding for Shark which is yet to be released!!
The best thing about Dolphin is that you can try it FREE (used the FREE version as long as you want) and upgrade for the modules which you really want to be included in your site.

I think you need to do a LOT more with links.com than what's currently being planned.
Using a third party service for something so expensive is not something I would do / recommend.
Would be happy to see if we can work out a 'for spec' proposal - will have a demo ready for another site we're doing by the 15th of Mar.
I plan to use kickapps or snapville to establish a community, but I don't see it as long term solution so I ended up using diff social networking currently running to our beta project www.plogging.com
Kickapps or snapville or me.com gives you a complete to manage a community with revenue sharing ads.
Hope this add idea for your project.

I have two projects I want to build out.
1/ is a common occupation (work) (much like this or dnforum) community.
-Thread Posting, live chat and maybe pictures along with the ability to place site ads, perhaps adsense and especially a classified ad section.
2/ Would be an adult site which would need all the above plus solid picture and video capabilities (uploading etc)
If any of you have done this and have some solid preferences and why you prefer it I'd appreciate any advice.
I'm also wondering about the profitability of communities like this. Are they ever profitable or just a passion with the owner? Anybody ever built a profitable community? I'm thinking in excess of 50k/annum net here or better.
Must be reasonably easy to install and run as I'm a technical idiot.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated. PM if you want privacy on the adult one!
I am looking at social networking softwares for a site that would enable missionaries to communicate while out in the field and would allow them to cross denominational barriers to come together for outreach events and to be able to have a community where people have common concerns, issues and needs.
So far, I'm leaning towards dolphin but I really need something like shark as this is certainly not a dating or typical social networking site. If I am able to customize dolphin enough to make it work for this application that great, but I can't help but wonder of there is another way... A more professionally-styled SN site.
Any thoughts or ideas for me?

Domain Name News & Commentary www.WeeklyNames.com
I just found this thread & am planning to have someone develop a proprietary social networking site with:
- ecommerce capabilities
- registration with restricted members only areas
- a 'template' for each member to upload their text, photos, video and a song or two
- my company must have full rights
and much more..
Any advice?
I am in the process of contacting local talent but am open to all advice.
Thanks
