Which one do you think is better? Ning or dolphin?
I just installed dolphin for a missions site. It is at missionaries(dot)net/index.php. Anyone interested in registering and helping me beta this so I can make it a vibrant missionaries network register me and PM your ID to me.

I have been very happy with www.webscribble.com. I have not seen this one mentioned yet, but I was able to alter it rather easily. Very good support as well.
I prefer ning, check out www.randompage.com to see it in action and get some ideas.

I have used Joomla but didnt like it very much, to me it was not very intuitive. However, I have seen some great looking Joomla sites. I heard that WordPress is working on a Social Networking software, not sure of the status as of now.
It's called http://buddypress.org - check it out...
I've been using ning.com for a couple years now... VERY easy to use and it's flexible enough to make the look and feel suit your needs. If you're someone who doesn't want to bother with the open source apps like joomla, drupal, etc... then ning is for you.
Here's my network : http://shareyoursl.ning.com/
It's free for your community but if you want to use your own domain or control the google ads, it'll cost you between $8 and $30 bucks a month. If you have a domain with a lot of traffic, paying to control the google ads can be worth it...
Hello,
Can some one give me advice of choosing something close to how orkut.com for example is built? So that users can have their accounts and they can date and make friends online?
About the design, I would like to have it all light and smooth looking, like Wall street journal or times online and with no adds.
Is there something like this available?
Regards.

Problem with dolphin it's to buggy and they keep on releasing new versions without fixing the old one which leads to one problem after another......anyway check our version out although we have left this site for a year until as we are working on a much bigger project using a better script called http://www.joovili.com/ it's the best out there at the moment imho.......
I am using Dolphin at www.missionaries.net but it is REALLY buggy. Lots of database errors and other issues.
I thinking about moving to a different system but I don't want to have to go though the same difficulty that I had to with Dolphin.

NING still work the best for me. I started www.randompage.com community for 100 members, now close to 4000 members in just 6 months. No reported issue from our members, which is great. They continue to create new features to increase members activity. This is great to maintain community.
Cheers.
Have you used it yet?

I developed WannaNetwork.com and it's been a pretty massive project.
I've been real happy using Wordpress elsewhere so I eagerly wanted to use it here. WannaNetwork.com has around 18,500+ members so it's probably one of the largest sites running BuddyPress. We also have bbpress and simple:press running on the site as well for the group forums and the main forums. There are a lot of conflicts runing it this way but we will iron these out and ultimately have an awesome open source social network that evolves at the pace of the platforms we use.
Buddy press is a nice clean script ideal for a blogging network but for a hardcore social network i would go with joovili ,we have a site with 25k members and its been rock solid,so really it depends what you wanna use it for ?
bulldog- do you mind sharing the site, im just interested in checking it out.
cheers
