Link sites? Where to begin?

Hi all,

I've heard a couple of people say that they have made money by registering a domain and creating a basic link/advertising page.

What exactly is this? Is it just a list of text links that have been affiliated?

I'd like to make a few websites similar to this and just looking for some thoughts on where to begin.

You can build a directory and accept paid listings, for example using www.phplinkbid.com
I got a similar dir for sale here, so it's quite profitable

That's exactly the type of thing I want, but one that integrates credit card process as I have been burned by paypal before and won't touch them again.

Any other thoughts?

Hm that might a problem. All the directory scripts I know use paypal.
I've been burned by paypal too but I think you don't have much to worry about when it's just for a directory.

I was looking at phpLinkBid.com just now, went thru the demo, beyond the first page of highest link bidders, it's too bad that you can't scroll to a 'next' page and see other sites that have bid to have their links shown more prominently. You're left with either the search function or ABCDEFG etc.

yeah, that's true. Although you can also add categories, like here

Are there any good tips to profit from directory. Like if I have a free directory I don't see where I can earn profit?
