Tips on making money though Wordpress sites?

    Anyone have any tips?

Normally when I make a site using WP I have 2 ads, one on the right navigation page and one in the footer page. I don't think the footers do too well (being at the bottom and all) but I'm thinking that the side bar does OK.

Also, Google search box in place of where the template's search box is.

I've had no success yet with Amazon links, though (I know, I guess I'm not that good with them).

Any other suggestions? Ad placement (left bar? Right bar? in articles? a page?) etc..?

I'm mainly looking for ideas to try out with some of my sites.

    Best Positions for blogs afaik:

    1. Just under header above the first post 468x60

    2. End of post above comments, below related links 468x60 or 336x280

    3. sidebar 120x600 / 160x600 / link ads

This is just my experience might not play out for you.

    Good Luck.

Monetization is the easy part. Focus on building the site with SEO + content.

Don't place adsense in the footer. Place it above the fold or at the top/bottom of articles. Opt for the wider ad units where possible.

Definitely - I am planning to get rid of the footer Adsense box. Above the fold (haven't heard that term in many years). I'll look at the coding and see if I can find a better place to put it.

Between the article and the comments - no bad.
Above the top post - not bad either.

Have you tried the left column (160x600 if possible) ?
Remove borders, same background color etc..
    All ads above the fold.

I've got some ideas. I'm not talking anything illegal, but definitely something that Google doesn't appreciate. If you don't want to touch it, I've got 100% legit ones, too.

I'm having success with the horizontal leaderboard "links" unit placed just beneath the main horizontal navbar. Try to blend colors.

    Agreed.

About ad placement: My favorite spot is directly below the article. It gives the reader somewhere to go after the article. And 9 times out of 10 anything directly above will be ignored when scrolled down to read. Example.

There are other "adsense zones" that Google recommends with detail. Let me go find it again and I'll post it.

I have trouble monetizing my blogs. I get around 30-40 odd uniques per day, but very little in the way of clicks (the CTR hovers around 1%). I have one ad unit in the sidebar, one above the title...

I've actually had the opposite effect - ads on the bottom perform less than ones between the title bar and the article itself.

Try putting ads/camouflage the ads so it looks like your link

My photoblog that's about a month old gets relatively the same amount of clicks/income with my other blog of more than a year with more on articles content.

Both of them are city/urban blogs.

    HI

I use... a 160x600 at the bottom of the right panel...

and adsense 60x468 banner spots in articles.

I also sell 6x - 125x125 banner spots on the top right hand panel.. or add affiliate banners here..

it seems to do ok for me.

    Thanks
    Tom

Why not both above and below?

As far as I know, Google doesn't want more than 3 Ad units per page, but does it count as two ad units if the same ad unit is used at the top and at the bottom?

It seems that way one would hedge their bets.

Why do you think the top ads get ignored? Do you have data to support that, or is it just your hunch? I know that after I finish reading I would tend to go back to the top of the page to look for ads if I wanted to buy something, and I'd remember having seen it.
