What's a good way to monetize this site?

WajaWiki.com (yes, I've gotten mixed up in that game).

The day it launched it crashed the servers - well over 5,000 hits. Day 2 was down to about 1500 but it seems to have settled around 100-200 a day (not bad).

I do have one AdSense on the site but I'm wondering - what about the top, below the tabs? Maybe text only links?

I'm assuming most of the people on the Wajas sites are younger females (already established to be about 80% female) - maybe 15-25 in age.

Can I set AdSense up to display ads based on keywords only? (Ringtones, etc..)?

If your server crashed with such a minimal amount of traffic, you really need a new hosting service. Without a reliable host, your site is going to suffer no matter how you monetize it.

If you want some ideas on how to monetize your wiki and how ads are going to look, dig through wikia.com to see how they have placed ads within each subject branch.

I don't know if the server crashed but in the first few hours (when I got the 5,000 hits) it wasn't available at times. (But yes, I have a cheap host since it is all I can afford now but this is the first issue I had - a much better track record than 1&1).

I'm not expecting traffic like that ever, it was just the first time it was publicly announced and people flocked to it to add to the Wiki.

Seriously though, 5,000 "hits" is a tiny amount of traffic when you consider that "hits" include html, css, javascripts, images, etc. One of my smallest sites averages 90 unique visitors a day, they generate 7100 total "hits" as they work their way through the site. I'd hate to think of the return visitors you lost when they couldn't access the site on their first visit.

The site is a good concept though, niche wikis seem to gain popularity very quickly.
