Thumbs down Joomla 1.6 - what the heck??

Last night I upgraded my Artisteer to 3.0 and decided to give Joomla 1.6 a go.

First red flag is that I had to install (discover) the new template. No big deal, it's a small change. But when I got it changed I noticed that none of the menus were working.

I found out that you have to manually assign where the menus go in the module manager (user1, user2, banner, etc.).

    What's up with that?

With 1.6 the initial setup is far better but WOW setting up the actual site and template is a real pain in the rear!

I cleared out the DB and went back to 1.5.

Stick with Joomla 1.5 until you are sure the upgrades are stable.

Plus, if the installed template (or script) is not compatible with 1.6, everything will be whacko.

Joomla.org is great for keeping you posted o stable changes and up to date.

From a web developer standpoint, Joomla 1.6 is a fantastic upgrade. It was definitely worth it to me just for the access controls that I needed when developing custom components/themes/etc.

However, as Doc said you run the risk of your templates/components/modules/plugins not working. There isn't that many extensions available for 1.6 right now and as a result, I've had to custom script about half the functionality for a client project that would have easily been available in 1.5.

Joomla.org is saying they will still support 1.5 for the time being. The major benefit to 1.6 IS the access controls and some other differences so they are recommending (and I am stressing) that is it perfectly okay to stick with 1.5. Honestly, if you don't need access control beyond what 1.5 can do then don't even bother right now.

Now I'm giving 1.7 a try, Artisteer says that with their new update the templates are 1.7 compatible. It looks it but only the header and footer are working. :S

Why is it everytime someone "upgrades" something something else gets messed up? :( Even /?tp=1 isn't working.

Edit: NM about the TP=1, I needed to turn it on.

Edit 2: I think I got it now, have to manually assign everything? :(

Both CMS have their advantages over each other. I'm debating if I want to wipe this site and do it though WP.

    Does WP do submenus?

Sub menu? You mean something like a tree structure (beginning with Parent and branching off?) Yes, if that is what you are referring to...
