This is a vague area. While offers and auctions are similar, the difference is generally summed up in the public nature of the bidding (auctions are generally public, offers are generally private -- but not always) and the obligation of the seller to sell (assuming reserves met).
To invite offers and withdraw sale is really not all that interesting. Had aZooZa begun an auction and withdrawn, this would draw more flack.
P.S. I never saw the original thread, though, so I am generalizing here.
