.eu domains are around the corner

Brace yourselves - .eu domains are (almost) go
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/03...omains_coming/
A mere six years after they were first proposed Europe is a step closer getting its very own top level domain - .eu.
It looks like we'll have a 4 month phase 1 that will allow registered entities to register domains, before its opened up to the general public.

    More details here

Well thats seems fair to me Duncan as we cant register .us or .ca hehehehe.

    http://www.eurid.org/en/home.php?n=107

That seems to imply its going to be 2006 before we can get anywhere near them anyways....

Hmmm...Not sure that's something I'd want to admit openly on a message board read by thousands of people. :bandit:

This will be the price for Registrars.

I just back from TargetedTraffic in Las Vegas, got a lot of questions.
The question I heared most often is: "Which names are not allowed to register"

    Here the core details:

Names which are blocked and may never be registered

    1. Geographical and/or geopolitical concepts
Under the terms of EU Regulation 733/2002, the legal framework for .eu, Member States were allowed to submit a limited list of broadly recognised names with regard to geographical and/or geopolitical concepts which affect their political or territorial organisation that may either:
    1. not be registered, or
    2. be registered only under a second level domain according to the public policy rules.

This will be published by the European Commission and will be available on our web site as soon as we receive it.
    2. Under EC Regulation 874/2004, the Public Policy Rules for .eu, it is stated that Alpha-2 codes representing countries shall not be used to register domain names directly under the .eu TLD. The two-letter codes for countries are defined by the International Organization for Standardization through the Maintenance Agency of the ISO 3166 country codes. Those codes which appear in the ISO 3166/1 list and the ISO 3166 reserve list are blocked and may not be registered as .eu domain names.

This will be published by the European Commission and will be available on our web site as soon as we receive it.
Names which are reserved for registration only by the European Commission or the government of a Member State

    1. Under EC Regulation 874/2004, the Public Policy Rules for .eu, Member States (and acceding countries) can request that their official name and the name under which they are commonly known in one or more of the official languages of the EU cannot be registered directly under the .eu TLD by any person other than their national government. Only the designated body appointed to represent the government of that member state may register those domain names which have been reserved in its name.
    2. Candidate countries that are not due to join the European Union in May 2004 and member countries of the European Economic Area that are not Member States may request that their official name and the name under which they are commonly known in their own language and in any of the official languages of the EU cannot be registered directly under the .eu TLD. To that end, those countries may send the Commission, within two months following entry into force of this Regulation, a list of those names which are not to be registered. At this time, these names may not be registered.
    3. Under EC Regulation 874/2004, the European Commission may notify the registry of a list of names to be reserved by the Commission for use by the Community institutions and the bodies that will represent those institutions and bodies in registering those names.

This will be published by the European Commission and will be available on our web site as soon as we receive it.
Names reserved for the use of the .eu registry

Under EC Regulation 874/2004, the following names are reserved for the operational functions of the registry:
    eurid.eu, registry.eu, nic.eu, dns.eu, internic.eu, whois.eu, das.eu, coc.eu, eurethix.eu, eurethics.eu, euthics.eu

You can visit www.eudomains.org for more information about .eu domain names. I try to gather as much reliable information as possible on the subject.
