I just got word of the proposal for .music gTLD has gone forward...
by more than ONE entity!
http://music.us/sign_support_petition.htm
I know of (not face to face) a few people involved with and behind this.
.music actually makes sense with the internet capabilities today.
We'll see what happens.
In the meantime, sign that daggone petition!

I think the internet has revolutioned the music industry, whether they wanted it to or not.
The music industry has still not embraced the power of the internet and how best to use it.
One thing they can not deny is the power (and the money) of ringtones.
I was listening to someone speak on television the other night on this very subject.
One reason there was such opposition to napster was the music industry did not understand how this concept worked. They simply viewed it as a threat to their very existance - file sharing and downloading.
Rather than embrace the potential or attempt to incorporate these models, they squashed it.
Too late.
Napster wasn't the end, only the beginning.
It is ring tones right now keeping these record companies afloat.
People will not pay $1.99 of 99cents for a download but they will pay three bucks for a ringtone???
I can see .music as being a huge boon for the music industry and new artists.
I think the reality to a great deal of this is to step back and look at from a consumer point of view and not so much a domainer.
Music is still a powerful medium. And the internet has done nothing short of performing miracles for many new acts and independent artists.
For a new gTLD, I can see it happening. As one the may be open to others whereas many of the proposed gTLD's will essentially be closed and very tightly controlled by the registry.
i signed it.which registrars will be using this extension.

nice of them to give you priority for signing the petition.
doc - interesting concept that people are keeping the record labels afloat by buying ringtones...
many musicians express that they are happy for people to freely share their music.
the best way to support a musician is to see them in concert..
Unfortunately, that's not the case- priority is given to those who sponsor/endorse .music
See: http://music.us/endorsers_sponsors.htm

I think Doc is onto something here and I fully agree with what he's been saying.
.music will be horrible for resellers / domainers (with a few exceptions) but would be great for bands, large name and small garage bands alike.

"rap.music"
"gosple.music"
"rock.music"
"country.music"
and
"jazz.music" all on reserve

IMO it should be regulated to only music related entities.
Apple would only have claims to domains like iPod.music etc.
Bands would be able to register their domains:
RollingStones.music
Chicago.music
Queen.music
Bach.music
Etc..
