I am clearing out my one-letter .tl domains. I just renewed these for another year in May. These are great for coupling with an existing brand, for novelty sites (Wouldn't you love to be the first kid on your block with a true four-character domain (that's letter-dot-letter-letter)? Hardly anyone else can make that claim
One-letter domains have also been the topic of a bit of controversy of late. In the .com registry, only three domains slipped out before Verisign closed down the registry --
x ,
z and
q (registered to PayPal, Nissan, and Qwest, respectively). The reason touted for this was technical in nature, however there has since proven to be no reason for the concern. Recently, ICANN was put under pressure to re-open these domains for purchase, but has been hesitant to do so.
So how did I come up with such great domains? When the .tl registry opened, I was apparently the only one in this community to know about it (I had requested information from them directly in the months leading up to the opening). During the launch I was able to snap up 20 of the 26 one-letter .tl domains. I only really wanted one (i.tl goes with a brand I am launching when I have the capital). However I couldn't pass up the other 19 based on their novelty and value.
Recently, the .im registry opened, and they have the gaul to charge £1k (that's ~$1850) PER YEAR for their precious one-letter domains. .tl only charges AUD$40 (~$50) per year, the same rate as all their other .tl domains.
I am content to sit on these for a while.
