    DNForum Members:

Being interested in ZT.NET I performed an USPTO.GOV query and came up with 20 live TM's.

Although 2 letter names can be successfully defended in a TM Law suite, the costs associated will far exceed the initial investment. Hence, a case can be made for knowingly posting a name for sale with questionable TM status without disclosure.

What are your opinions fellow DNForm members?

It's a valid concern. Before spending that much money - I would make sure where you stand.

Maybe 'Android' already has done his homework here - and can put the fears to rest.

nearly every 2 letter combination has some marks associated with it. by drwho's logic, gregr might soon have to surrender ec.com to a holder of an 'ec' mark. in my mind, this is absurd logic.

in theory, the mark owner COULD attempt to take the domain from you, but a simple reply to them pointing out the infinately generic and flexible nature of a 2 letter acronym should end it.

the very fact that there are multiple owners of 'zt' marks in various spaces supports the right to own zt.net. it demonstrates the LACK of exclusive rights to the mark across all conceivable applications.

of course, you can't make use of zt.net in a way which infringes on a holder of a 'zt' mark, but that's a completely different conversation.

if you are worried about having to defend the name, don't buy it. simple as that.

PS - yes, i do know what i'm talking about. i've been attacked by 'trademark-squatters' several times and come out on top always. big companies too - as big as they get.

What Charlie says makes sense - and I just ran a check of several 2 letter combos that are registered to various people I know (including myself). Every one comes back with multiple TM's so apparently that is very common.

*EDIT* - I just spoke with someone who is far more familar with TM issues than most of us - and she assured me that this is not a problem. While it may appear a little scary on the surface - there is apparently nothing to fear unless you use the name in bad faith to damage or infringe on somebody else's existing mark.

    Nice 2 letter Android.
In my opinion trademark issues would be irrelevant unless the domain owner does one of two things with this name:
    1. sell products similar to a trademarked company or
    2. The name owner tries to sell the name to the trademark holder.

Otherwise there should be no conflicts unless an unscrupulous trademark squatter tried to TM ZT.net in it's entirety. Very doubtful but it does happen.

I'm not a legal expert and there are exceptions to every case but I would not hesitate to buy this name out of TM concerns. 2 Letter .nets are extremely rare and I would be exuberant to own one just from the standpoint of rarity if I could afford it.
    My two cents

Yes, I agree. This is basic trademark law.

What I don't understand, bidawinner, is what the hell happened to your avatar?!

It looks like a dog in a blender..
