Transfers Explained

Hey,

Just wanted to try and clarify how registrar and registrant transfers, now work within the .ca namespace.

Registrar Transfers

To complete a registrar transfer the domain name must have its transfer prohibitied flag unlocked, and you must obtain the authorization code from your current registrar.

Registrar's are obligated to provide you with your authorization code within 5 days of your request.

The process of actually transfering your domain will be different for each registrar, on ready.ca you simply add the domain to your cart and once on the cart screen click the green configure button and add your authorization code to the configuration form and save.

In the near future we will have a bulk authorization code system to eliviate the process.

When Can't I transfer to a new Registrar?

• within the first 60 days of a registration
• within the first 60 days of completing a registrar transfer
• if your domain enters tbr status
• within the first 60 days of acquiring a domain in tbr
• within the first 60 days of a registrant transfer (push)

Registrant to Registrant Transfer (Push)

This is very much a per registrar solution, there is no requirements to how one should complete a registrant to registrant transfer and/or push.

On ready.ca you simply enter your domain manager select the domain(s) you want to push, click the push icon and enter the new internal contact, if your pushing to a contact you control, or enter the email address of the Ready.ca customer you want to push to.

In order for a push to be successful, you must have unlocked the update prohibited flag on your domains, as a push updates the registrant contact.

When can't I push a domain?

• Within the first 60 days of a domain registration
• within the first 60 days after winning it in tbr
• within the first 60 days after a previous registrant transfer (push)
• within the first 60 days after transfering a domain to a new registrar
• if your domain enters tbr status

Just one question about how long registrations are. I transferred domains that were in auto-renew grace to another registrar and it shows 2 years at cira but only paid a one year fee.

Yeah basically the registrar you transfered away from got screwed as they didn't delete the domain before you transfered it, so in essence you got a free year on them. This is something CIRA has had a lot of compliants from registrars about and their going to address it in 2011. But they should delete any domain in Auto-Renew before giving the auth code as once the auth code is out it can be transfered. They should also change the auth code once the domain goes into auto renew in case the client retreived it prior to the auto renew period.

This is how ready is setup, we try and keep all domains in auto-renew as long as possible to give everyone extra time on their lifecycle.
