.BIZ Tops All Extensions on This Week's Sales Chart - 5 of Top 6 Sales Are Non .Coms

The new weekly domain sales Report is out at DNJournal.com. This has to be one of the most unusual weeks we've ever seen in the domain aftermarket. The often-maligned .BIZ TLD produced the year’s biggest non .com gTLD sale to top all comers and lead our new all extension Top 20 Sales Chart. What’s more, five of the first six places on the elite list were swept by non .com TLDs. Five country code domains made the elite list along with a dozen .coms. Couldn't help but notice there were several nice .us sales. The dot Com is still king, but there is also money to be made in other extensions, especially country codes.

Some times it is hard to just believe how some of these domains are sold for so much. I see and even have my own domains that are better than a lot of those on the sale list but I couldn't get $50 here on dnf.

I spent many years trying to figure out why somewhat dubious value names sell for lots of money (sometimes amazing amounts of money) as reported in DNJ, but much better names never sell at all or very low prices on forums.

The main reason suddenly dawned on me a few years ago. It's mainly because there are 10s of millions of domains and 100s of 1000s of potential buyers so what with such vast numbers it all boils down to luck. Even if less than 1% sell it's more than sufficient to fill the DNJ pages all year due to end-users wanting a specific targeted domain for business use.

That's why I pay little attention to DNJ sale reports (but keep up the excellent work Ron) and other venues anymore (some weeks not even reading the data) since most of the sales are basically due to luck and not much more with the *sales venue making no real difference since it likely would have sold regardless of where it was listed for sale.

The main exception to that are *Premium Names at GoDaddy where IMO the names may not sell unless listed as a GD premium listing, but that GD advantage only applies on names priced under 5k I believe (and applicable to people who only use Godaddy to try and freshly register a taken name).

A more or less perfect example is All.biz being sold for a phenomenal $61,750. i would peg its value at a fraction of that (my guess is under 5k, maybe 1k or 2k) so why did it sell for 61k? The answer is probably in para 2 above (one in a million type of luck).

It's a fluke, .biz is worthless in general. But good LLL.biz are available for $$ if you're a believer

I think that buyer of all.biz got a lot of typin traffic.

David G, I think your post has a lot of validity. There isn't much of a pattern to the domains in the DNJournal sales report. Sometimes you can see a few trends, like when 'roulette' type domains were selling, but most are hard to figure out. Once you get past the top generic .com's and obvious nice keyword terms, there are many that just can't be explained other than it's probably a buyer who sees some potential, or wants it for their business domain. But it is worth checking the sales reports because it's helpful to see what kinds of names are selling.

I don't think the All.biz sale is going to spark any major upswing in the .biz extension.

That must be it David. Just pure luck and nothing else. I have started to hate domaining to be honest. I have pissed away so much money in it. So ridiculously hard to get even a mid $xx for pretty decent keyword domains with hundreds or even a 4 figure searches in google. I have tried and no luck. Dropped hundreds of domains in the past 10 months because I got tired of renewing and pissing away all the money. Guess what most of them are godaddy parked pages so either godaddy owns them or some one else does but never changed name servers after they picked them upat the drop or Godaddy auction. A lot of them even have parked pages with a offer or sale link and asking price is in the mid $xxx so what a shame that I couldn't get $xx at the forums for them. They must have been decent enough domains to be picked up at the drop or else they would be available for re registration. 20% were crappy for sure because those were the ones I registered when I got started.

I have even spoken to a couple of guys who picked up and payed more than $69 but what a shame that I couldn't get $20 for them and I even offered renewal in that price for a lot of them. So yes when I see that list I get pissed because a lot of those domains are just pure shit but I guess the sellers were lucky.

I think I should just probably stick to Affiliate Marketing where I made some money and Forex. Because trading Forex I can make a very very nice income every month compare to domaining but I pissed away money into domains rather than focusing on Forex and putting my full efforts. I distracted myself by getting involved in domaining and I am getting frustrated and will probably quit once either most of my domains are dropped or sold if I am lucky. I will probably just keep a handful just to build affiliate sites.
