Question Is appending “the” to a domain name a bad idea?

When Facebook.com started, it was “TheFacebook.com” the bought it as facebook.com was reged at the time.

Obviously doing something like TheGoogle.com would not be a good idea but what if the domain you wanted was only parked yet the guy was asking over the odds?

Should you reg TheDomain.com if domain.com was reged and parked (assuming the site had not been developed and no trademark issues.)

After all if you were going on to develop the site he (the owner of domain.com) is more likely to get more of your traffic than you are of his.
