    Thumbs down Beware User JeffKang

Okay, here is the deal. I baught this domain Today Stats .Com http://www.dnforum.com/f550/big-list...ad-390813.html

I couldn't figure out why sedo wouldn't accept it. I emailed them and they replied that it was getting a high rate of traffic with no clickthroughs. They re-enabled it again, and it got kicked again within 1 hour. (Seasoned pros know what this means)

    That was the first flag.

So, fowarded it to one of my sites. Sure nuff, no referer stats and all you got was ip's.

A few months later and NUMEROUS emails from this dude for me to leave him good feedback, and this is what I have to say.......

This dude is selling names with fake hits (proxy) in order to inflate the stats to try and fetch a higher dolla.

    Beware.

OHH. BTW......... A few months later, the domain is getting exactly 0 hits.

    Believe That!

Are you complaining about a name that was being dropped & that you purchased for $20?

Whether it was purchased for $20 or not isn't a big deal, it's letting users go around inflating traffic stats & posting domains for sale with intention of defrauding the buyers.

What if someone inflated 200 domains with proxy traffic and sold them for $20 each? Would that be a different story then?

domainstats or stats.com was the domain?

Frankly I want to know what happened to the $750 payors on that thread.

If he stiffed worldwide i would say Paypal or the payment portal needs to get involved.

for $20 build your own traffic. Move on and be glad you didn't get stung for $750.

I had done one deal with him in the past. Cheap names with some revenue. I didnt see any negative side to it.

He was a deadbeat seller for sure as he never once responded to my emails then sold the names I had claimed elsewhere.

It is good of you to point it out but there is a strong chance he did not drive traffic to the sites himself, but was dumping the names because he had trouble monetizing traffic he had. If he had made claims of type-in traffic etc fair enough, but it was a low value name and he states there is no guarantee of continued traffic ~ caveat emptor i'm afraid.

I would move on and be glad it wasn't worse. I think he pi$$ed off quite a few potential buyers, (myself included, see simon above) with his poorly managed sale, so he's good enough at damaging his own reputation for you not to have to.

I am still perplexed why domainers buy domains based on traffic stats.

We all know that they can be so easily faked and manipulated.

This industry is and always will be buyer beware.

Then again, if anything is of any value at all (not just domains) then be prepared to deal with fake and fraud. If there is a demand and people are willing to pay money then someone is well prepared to take your money and give you nothing.

There are still names whose main value re based upon traffic and/or parking income. Oh, and what about web-sites?

And how many people do you trust to provide true and factual stats?

How many names have you bought and sold with no stats provided?

Good names, keywords, generics stand on their own merits.

In all the years I have been buying and selling names, I have never negotiated over traffic stats. I may ask for numbers but still do not put much faith in them.

As for sites, same thing. There are many factors I look for and stats that most people would not even consider when looking at site stats. One of the biggest factors for me as a measure of success is time spent on the site. You could present me with a site that gets a million in traffic per day. But if the average time spent on the site is 2-6 seconds, I have no interest what so ever.

As for manipulating site traffic numbers, I could easily forward traffic from every domain and site I owned to one site and report staggering numbers for the buyer to consider. Then when that name is sold, I take off that traffic redirect/forward and pump up another to show staggering traffic/income.

There are ways to protect from getting burned. Traffic source (may require added time if many sources - if they make no sense [keywords searched for do not parallel the site's theme]) and amount of time viewer spends on site is crucial for my consideration.

There is a way to test this even if someone does not have tracking stats installed. I have done it once before when someone was considering a drop I had purchased that had a very high PR ranking. I forwarded it to him to measure for three days. The end result was a nice sale. Even then, there was no negotiating. I had a set price. If it met his expectations, he would buy. It did. He did.

Depends on the person. Domains and domaining in general demand a certain level of trust. Our online reputations as buyers, sellers, traders and forum members speaks volumes.

Someone like you with 74 positive trades and 0 negatives under their belt and has been around for several years I would feel pretty comfortable dealing with. Even if we were talking a few thousand.

I won't do business with anyone that has a negative or two in their trader ratings on this forum as that's all I have to go off of and I can't trust them. Period.
