    Biggest domain regrets

A few years ago, I reg'd instanttax.com and I let it expire... During the time I had it, I never recieved one offer, now, a major co picked it up. I still think about it. One of my biggest regrets, I could have sold for a crapload.

Didn't pick up a financial term domain for $12k that was subsequently sold for $42k.
Sold LL .net's for $2k a piece instead of holding long term; some passed the $15k threshold.
Flipped LLL .com's for under $1k (acquisition cost was minimal).

It's funny seeing those early errors, 10 years later

Spending 10's of thousands of dollars registering domains and renewing them instead of buying some real good ones for the same money wasted. If only bought 10 good domains and built sites and business on them I wouldn't need to work anymore. Oh well you learn..

My biggest regret is not getting into domaining in the mid to late 90's.

The odd part is at the agency I was working for, we were registering domains for clients. The internet was still fairly new and I viewed domain names as a form of "vanity plates" - a form of personalized license plate.

All our work that dealt with internet marketing and design (website) was farmed out to one guy that could do computer graphics and site design. I remember this guy very well. Russell was showing me what he could do, literally creating his own type fonts, with his new computer - an Apple. He was totally freelancing, not working for any one agency, but was making so much money on his own. I also remember him trying to talk sway me going into business with him and starting our own agency.

That part of computing interested me most - the graphics capability, not domain names or websites. One agency I was working for was making several hundred million per year in late 80's to early 90's. Meanwhile, we were registering names for clients like there was no tomorrow. Most were furniture manufacturers and NASCAR and NASCAR teams and even some Las Vegas Casinos and I had no interest in them.

In the 90's I registered my full name (the .com), then let it drop when times were tough and I couldn't justify the $35 renewal.

Since then it has bounced around a bit, but I have never been able to catch it, and none of the subsequent owners would consider selling. It is now parked and being cybersquatted for a crazy amount of money.

Lately been regretting regging some domains that I'm now letting drop - pairing down the portfolio but it's all a learning experience. I still think many of the names I drop have value, but you can only invest in so many names without being able to develop them all.

Regged my first domain in Jan 2000, but didn't really get the potential of this industry and what were the best type of names to reg until around 2005.

I caught on to Twitter early on and could have regged some amazing usernames (not domains, but close enough).

Life is about ups and downs... you take the good, you take the bad. It doesn't matter what industry its in, the same can get said. Remember this, all it takes is one successful flip of whatever (one stock trade, one house flip, one domain flip etc) The real men keep plugging away, the weak give up.

My biggest regret was buying too many the first year starting out, before taking the time to understand where the value was and which metrics were worthwhile.

My biggest regret was not convincing enough newbies how "markets" function. I wish I was a better teacher.
