Register Today on DNForum IT'S FREE!I can't even believe I saw this as I was driving home this evening - Coastal Construction, here in Victoria, BC was driving their Ford Escape in front of me and on the back, a small logo for Coastal Construction and on the bumper in bright white writing... WWW.COASTAL.CN
Could there possibly be a large market for these ccTLDs outside of their desired country? I just commented on a similar thread about how we are seeing some bizarre ccTLD combinations but I was actually shocked when I saw this today.
Anyone else have similar findings in their day to day travels?
Defiantly wrong choice, what a bizarre marketing!
maybe CN sounds like cananda![]()
Does it matter??? Most people in this world don't know the difference between ccTLD's and Canadians are probably no different. The average person will not care.
When I first got into this business I thought .ca had something to do with California since that is its abbreviation to Americans. LOL
I think it might be possible to sell a company a ccTLD that is not the TLD they usually use in that country, but may sound or look like the country you want to market it in.
like in this case, .cn being used in canada, (CANADA) or .cr instead .cz for Czech Republic etc
Huge marketing mistake. But there are always people who think too much outside the box![]()
NameNewsletter.com - free lists of available domain names
ZoneFiles.net (beta) - ccTLD and gTLD droplists
ditto . huge marketing mistake
but you can still find stupid end users and sell them these types of names![]()

I am not too sure that it would be any different from someone using Downtown.LA to convey Los Angeles
From a branding standpoint it may be an uphill battle. But as more and more savvy marketing people and new domains come on board, this may start being seen more and more.
It would be like using SanJose.ca - CA in this case being the official abbreviation for California.
As I have stated many times, domainers do not control the internet.
It would be like a domainers telling someone, "No! You can't do that!"
Someone better tell them that coastal.ca seems to be available for registration.

No, it's not available draggar.
Huh, the page doesn't resolve plus the WhoIs errored out - I guess that's why they used the .cn - all other major TLDs are taken.

Draggar, coastal is registered in provincial extensions. Maybe that's why you are getting errors....
Ah, so instead of coastal.ca it would be something like coastal.que.ca? (For Quebec - just a guess) like .FL.US for Florida, USA?

Yes, i think it is registered in .ns and .ab.
I would at first think it was a typo mistake on their part...
and coastalconstruction.ca is available.

.CN for marketing a Canadian business. lol

Are they a purely Canadian business or do some International work?
Some people are seemingly imposing borders on domains.
I would hate to think Hare.ms only applies to Middle Eastern nations.
Perhaps someone should show them the error of their ways.
Better yet, ask them how good (or bad) business is. They have owned and perhaps used this web address for 5 years.
