My understanding is that this latest strike is more a response to a CCTV news magazine report aired on Dec 9, which linked illegal online activities with false domain registration info.

For those who are not aware of it, investigative journalism in China has led to A LOT of reforms and prosecutions in the past decade.

You might be right, this is a domain forum after all. I have a forum which has allowed me the chance to communicate with the Chinese intensively (sometimes intensely of course) since 2003. It had been blocked too many times until earlier this year when I decided to give up. I had no choice because simply switching domains or IP's no longer worked thanks to the powerful white list blocking. (Yes, it happened at least eight months ago.) I'll stop here.

More notices have been posted on CNNIC's Chinese website:

Dec 24 - Reminder to domain holders to fulfill website registration procedures ASAP

Dec 22 - CNNIC opens online complaint channel, encourages reporting improper domain use

These titles are quick translation by yours truly, try Google Translate for something worse (LOL).

I have dozens of .CN domains, all sedo-parking since day one. I knew better than to mess with any of them (LOL). Let's see what comes next.

I do believe that some day China will take over the world... However, for right now, they don't seem to be able to manage their own sock drawer. If China is really planning to have a hand in capitalism, they need to learn the first lesson, sex sells... Porn is what runs the Internet.

I honestly think the mod should merge the 2 .CN threads, but here's more first hand info:

CNNIC has set up a new "reporting" website at http://jubao.cnnic.cn. (Jubao means report.)

For those who are curious, CNNIC IS checking ALL 13.68 MILLION .CN domains *ONE BY ONE*; and up till Dec 28, they have already done 2.04 MILLION and identified (and stopped resolving) 2,618 "cheap and dirty" domains.

So this time, it's for real. And for those who are not familiar with the Chinese (government) way of doing things, it means "RUN (for your life)".

For more details, check out http://www.cnnic.net.cn/html/Dir/2009/12/28/5759.htm (in Chinese).

.CN Update - Suspension of New Registrations for .CN

We have just been notified by .CN Registry (CNNIC) that effectively from 6 January 2010, 1800 hours GMT +0800, no overseas application for .cn will be accepted until further notice from the registry.

Thus, WebNIC will not be accepting any new .cn domains registration application after the above mentioned date and time.

Please note that this changes only apply to NEW .CN registrations. Partners can still manage their existing .CN domains via the partner central. Renewal and registrar transfer request are not affected.

We will continue to update you when we receive new information from CNNIC.

    Thank You.

    Warm Regards,
    Support

Yes, I actually *mistakenly* post this piece of news on the other thread.

If you ask me, they shiould NOT have opened up .CN to just anybody in the first place.

I prefer open ccTLD policies, meaning availble for anyone to register rather than limitations.

I too prefer open and predictable registries.
Actually China is very predictable, given the extent of Internet filtering going on there there's no way they are going to let their TLD go wild.

My take for ccTLDs (not just .CN but all others incl. e.g. .CA) is that they should PRIMARILY serve residents of respective countries or businesses with bona fide interest there, which is actually why ccTLDs were established in the first place.

Like I said, they (CNNIC) made a serious mistake (misjudgement) a few years back. Again, GREED is the problem here, in a place where Capitalists are now the new boss, and the government is clearly looking out for their interests instead of the "working families".

China HAS suspended .CN and Forgein registrations

    CNNIC Suspends Domain Registrations
In a surprising development, CNNIC, the official registry for .cn, has suspended accepting new .cn registrations for registrants outside of China.
This additional directive was issued shortly after their announcement that as of 6 January 2010 18:00 PM (Beijing Time), overseas registrars would no longer be allowed to register .cn domains.
As a result of this change by CNNIC we will have to immediately suspend new .cn registrations until further notice. At this point in time existing domain names will not be affected and domain renewals will continue to be processed as normal.
We have been informed by CNNIC the registration stop is planned to be temporary, however no timeline has been provided for resuming overseas registrations. The reason cited for the suspension was difficulty in handling the new application material the registry required in the middle part of December.
We are in contact with the registry and will provide updates on the issue as they become available. It is our intent to be able to offer .cn domain registration when the registry lifts the self-imposed suspension.
    Kind Regards,
    Melbourne IT eBusiness centre
