Do you prefer .Net, .Org or .Us?

If you were going to buy a domain name which has a decent amount of traffic in terms of people searching for the exact term and it has a high average CPC, would you prefer to buy the .Net, .Org or .Us (if the .Com was already owned)? Or is there some other extension that you prefer?

Hey David, thanks for not replying to my PM the other day. Anyways, .net is always #2 to .com imo, especially if it a product related keyoword domain. Look at what sells and people mostly develop, you will see .com and .net mostly for keyword domains. I also like .de as far as ccTLD as it is the #2 most registered domain extension behind .com and #1 most registered ccTLD

sorry about that michael... I thought I sent it a few days ago! I just replied via PM, so tell me if you don't get my message.

I think I agree with .net being #2... but I have been reading a lot of good things about .us being the "next" big thing... so was just wondering what people here thought.

It depends on niche and what kind of site it would be.
For example, if it's education related, .org would be best.

Even to these days, people in general have preconceived definition of extentions.

    .com - commercial site
.net - internet service or related business
.org - non profit, therefore, built-in trust factor
.us - what's that? (I have few, but, many will ask that )

Definitely .net, unless it's for non-profit/organizational purpose.

    Hi David

just wanted to point out that this phrase is invalid:

buy a domain name which has a decent amount of traffic in terms of people searching for the exact term
using it in that context, will always lead you to the wrong conclusion.

i say that because the results are not indicative of actual traffic that the domain will receive.

google's keyword tool is not the same as the defunct overture tool.... so do not confuse them

my preference is the hyphenated version if available in .com

next would be the extension that the terms fit best with or try other keywords in .com

    imo...

If the .com is just owned (and not developed) I try to buy that...it is a good time to buy.

Otherwise, .net for business related and .org for non profit or a blog.

Biggie - that is true, but if you have a term that is highly searched according to google's keyword tool, it is indicative that if you were to be listed on the first page, you would be able to get a decent fraction of the traffic (albeit, it would still be a fraction of course), no?

What was the defunct overture tool? Sounds like it would be interesting, if it wasn't defunct. Do you use something else to try to gauge potential traffic?

    David

here's an old thread with some info about Overture tool:

    http://www.dnforum.com/f34/what-w-ov...ad-179273.html

right now, with soooo many domainers using google's adword/keyword tools, the results have to be flawed, due to our "overzealous inquiries" of keywords.

for me, seems like using a common sense approach is about the best tool out there

    Agreed.

Assuming business is based in the U.S.:

.net .us .org for a commercial site.

.org, .us, .net for informational or organization type site. I have many .us' that make very nice profits developed.
All offers good for 72 hours except running auctions

.US first, followed by .net, and generally pass on .org for business applications/purposes.

One other...I like .net for a business networking site (if you do not have the .com).

I think .us is too unknown to be taken seriously. When ever I see .us on the side of a truck on the road...I just think poorly of that company...maybe not fair, but it is my 1st impression. If it is a .net or .org - I do not have the same feeling.

It all depends on my usage. There are some niches that would do far better with .org domains than .net (think charity.org or charity.net?) - and my niche is one of those (luckily I can pick up good .org and .us domains cheaply). I also like .us domains (since I am in the US and 99% of my potential audience / customers / end users are in the US)

For a business, I'd think .net would do far better - or even get a .com that you could use (developing a .net (or any tld) will get the .com more traffic.

.net is definitely the backup to .com, should it be taken.

A .org will only attract seriousness in the case of a non-profit such as a charity or a political party. Just won't do as a commercial purposes TLD.

As for .us... I really can't see the benefit besides a slightly cheaper reg fee.
