I've registered some pretty bad ones, but also a few good ones. After reading and watching the pros in action, I'm getting a better feel for the business and am very selective in my hand regs (no more double and triple hyphen domains for me)
Also, while we're on the subject, does anyone know if registrars allow you to reduce the registration period for domains (say from 2 years to one) and do they issues refunds? My bad ones are coming up to their one year anniversaries and I would just a soon let them drop then to hang on to them for another year.
I haven't invested enough $$ to the domain names when I started.
I've wasted a few hundred bucks on low quality LLLL.com's and after it on a few bad LLLL.nets.
I've managed to unload 95% of the bad LLLL.net's for a small profit and I keep my LLLL.com's for the long term. At least now I have at least 10-12 good LLLL.com's like BBBD.com
Did I loose any cash?
Plain no, as I've started this online business long ago and I'm reinvesting cash from some sites I've sold and adsense monthly revenue, so let's say I'm using my rent revenue to buy more real estate.
Did I make any mistakes?

I think the biggest mistakes a domainer can make is not accepting when they are wrong (and we are all wrong at times) and also not listening to others.
Markets also change quickly and if investing in some of the more liquid areas of domaining you need to know when its time to sell.
I made some decent money on my first domains, but that was more luck than judgement as the domains weren't especialy good.
I saw a recent article about Warren Buffett's top 10 business tips. One of them - which I think is great for domainers to keep in mind - is to reinvest your profits in your business. I have made the mistake of cashing out too much of my profit, and now I wish I had more money to invest when a great deal comes along ....

The first name I ever bought was PetHall and I made it into a website. I need to revamp the site real soon. At a time it commanded a lot of internet traffic but it has fallen into neglect over the pass few years.
The irony is that most of my early purchases are not available now so they can't have been that bad or someone is still remaking my mistakes.
In the end I think all said and done, sometimes beauty is really in the eyes of the beholder.

I started by hand-regging domains too. My portfolio is very small (20+).
A portion of these domains are actually well used. I will drop the worst ones and develop or try to sell the others.
I learned that handregging domains is not the way to go unless you are very lucky and the first one to register like when you know about a new trend, something in the news etc...
It was a cheap lesson and am still learning everyday. I have changed my strategy and look forward to invest in premium domains.
Another thing I noticed that it is better to go for it completely. I registered here at DNF about 2 years ago but after a while went idle. I regret that I lost all this time but fortunately enough continued.
