    Lightbulb Domains of the Future?

    Hi folks

I thought I would have a bit of a go at the predictive domaining thing and try to anticipate future markets, now I know this type of domaining is pretty speculative some of these things may pan out and some may not and I know there are many here that I probably should not have registered, that’s a result of being a know nothing newbie who probably needs to up there bipolar medication, there are many here that even with the very little I have learned up to this point I would not register now, I know I have been a bit of an idiot with many, but hopefully there are some that have a good chance of being worth keeping, some of these markets are pretty long term I know, but I am looking to be a long term investor and don’t mind keeping them 5 or 10 years or even longer (but a lot have a good chance of becoming popular in the next couple of years), if it is likely that the kind of value they may have will justify doing so. But I am new to domaining and pretty ignorant and the one thing I am learning is that a bad name is a bad name no matter how thriving the market may become, so with this in mind I am wondering which I should definitely keep and which I should definitely ditch, that’s the other thing I am learning is not to be afraid to show the shit the shovel. I am also interested to know what people think of the prospects of the markets in general. I have included links to various YouTube videos and other material that explain all about the area for those who may not be aware or know much about them, so hopefully those who are interested in future technology and predictive domaining will find some of the subjects and material of interest, I think some of these things are pretty cool, but then again I am a bit of a geek when it comes to anything to do with the future. So what do you reckon? Which would you keep and which would you ditch?

As always I am eternally grateful for any advice as I am still pretty clueless when it comes to domaining.

    Many many thanks

I think green environmental names are a sure bet for the future and I see you have a few of those.

I especially like the alternative energy names such as the ones using hydrogen, h2, fuelcell, fc, solar and wind. Kilowatt and/or kw are good bets for future websites when used with cars, vehicles, bikes, boats, scooters, etc, simply because of the big demand to stop burning fossil fuels for energy. Electricity is taking the place of combustion for transportation.

Other good names will be those using co2, eco, emissions, and ev (for electric vehicles).

I'm not so sure about the future of 'green' domains as the .eco gTLD is one of the new gTLDs being considered by ICANN. Should it be approved, the value of 'green' type domains in .com (and many other non-ccTLD extensions) will be affected.

ditto. That is also the likely scenario with other categories too. Even geo could be effected since if say .vegas or .lasvegas or .ny or .newyork is approved it seems the value of the dot-coms would be heavily impacted. Other examples are genrics like .health where if approved health.net or health.com would decline in value, imo. or something less well known such as .math which would seem to make the value of a name like mathematics.com decline, or .cars where cars.com would be impacted., etc etc etc...

The upcoming new unlimited tld's may explain why it appears a lot of heavy hitters are trying hard to sell at this time including high value category killers. Makes me more positive that I have so many targeted multiword and long domains which seem less inclined to be severely iimpacted by the new tlds.

    Interesting angle.

But I doubt any new extensions will dramatically alter search results for years to come. I have yet to see a .travel, .pro, etc name ever appear in the results of a google search. For the time being, search dominates internet traffic, and to have any impact on search results, the new extensions would require a major shift in the names / methods / algorithms the big search engines index / use to index. Barring that, major PR & branding would be the only way to get them ranked, as with any other extension.

Well there is a competing .green in the works too. Good luck to both parties

More TLDs to track. It is like I am building up a database of broken dreams here. At the moment, .asia is close to going below 200K domains registered (probably tomorrow or the day after). The .tel sTLD is now being sold below cost by Enom and its resellers. The .tel is in the middle of its Landrush anniversary Junk Dump phase and is losing domains and this is only trying replicate what Afilias did with .info a few years ago. While .tel may be a technically elegant TLD, it has failed to capture the public's imagination. Most of those new gTLDs will become Zombie TLDs (zTLDs) with less than a few hundred thousand domains registered. They will stagger on for years before eventually failing. Some new gTLDs will be successful. What a lot of domainers don't realise about .com TLD is that much of its of its recent non-PPC growth is due to dual com/ccTLD registrations where a new domain in a ccTLD will also have the equivalent domain registered in .com TLD.

I am concerned about what effect new tlds may have and especially the green and eco ones, but I think its highly unlikely the mighty dotcom will ever take second place to any of them.

It will effect .com's by increasing the value of good green .com's.

It will indeed be interesting to see how the new tld’s fare, but personally I would still choose hydrogenscooters.com over hydrogenscooters.green, thanks to all those who have advised so far it is much appreciated.

By the way did anybody check out the link to the AR site http://ge.ecomagination.com/smartgrid/?c_id=Drivepm#/augmented_reality , you do have to print something out and fire up your webcam to try it but if you haven’t seen AR in action it’s well worth it, I had never seen anything like it and it totally blew my mind, super cool hey what do you reckon?
