How to tell a domain name is deleting

I use software that tells me domain names are deleting which is great but if I were to check this manually what would be the process?

And how does this software find thousands of domains that are deleting?

When i need to check a domain manually i use http://www.domaintools.com (excellent tool btw).

The software you are using could parse the domain names from lists like http://justdropped.com/ or pool.com. This is a guess since you didn't mention what software you are using.
