This is just one idiot. There are lots of idiots. He just happened to have a father who knew how to work the system. I think he wanted to get caught this time. In the grand scheme of things he is no more or less evil than hundreds of other idiots. His victim was young, blond and American though which got him a lot of press.

Perhaps, but I give a lot of credit to her mother for relentlessly pursuing this and not letting the matter rest. Plus, the fact are that Natalie was part of a group who went down to Aruba with her but had to come home without her. Their voices and efforts made Natalie's disappearance a hot topic.
I think it is their actions that deserve the press scrutiny, the botched investigation, the life of a diplomat's son, and the Dutch police not properly pursuing him as a primary suspect that garnered so much attention.
