if its in pending delete no registrar has any kind of priority. its all about who is the fastest and GoDaddy is not.

regardless, they have DIBS on the domain, there were MUCH MORE valuable names they caught registered with them very recently.
    they're obviously useless, thx.

GoDaddy is only good for registering domains. I don't like the fact that I got to pay upfront for the backorder when other major companies take the credit card but only charge if they grab the domains.

I had a domain backordered with 3 major companies and the owner renewed his domain just 2 days before the final date.

I use GoDaddy.com often for backorders. I get about 80% of the ones I want (maybe less). The ones I miss I assume I was too late, someone else using another registrar submitted the order before me, or the original owner re-reg'd. Doesn't the first in line get the domain? I've had one go to auction on Godaddy.com which was kind of fishy, but they say it happens when more than one person from Godaddy.com backorders. My opinion is the good ones will be a battle so you have to keep trying and win what you can.

Snapnames charges $59, and the others I've seen are in this price range too. I try to get away from GoDaddy at least twice a year but I haven't found any registrar that has a full load of services that in total are cheaper than one cheap service offered by a competing registrar. Godaddy charges $18.99 (less your 10%, 15%, 20% coupons) but you have to use it. That's not a problem if you plan to keep looking for drops. The ones I don't get I just change the domain name so you never waste it. That's 3 drops per 1 at Snapnames ($18.99 vs $59). You also get free email and other products if you need them. I do not work for Godaddy or any registrar.

So putting price aside, is there any great backorder tool, feature or benefit that stands out from Godaddy?

Name.com has a similar price but with a refund policy. I have had a little success with them but pool, enom and snap are the ones you need to go with if you really want the name. If the name is in the 5 day pending delete, It is with Verisign, not the previous registrar, and all comers are able to grab it. Even you can grab it at reg fee if you time your purchase perfectly. A backorder just gives them incentive to get it for you with all their technology. More than one backorder at Snap, Pool or NameJet (enom)? If they get it, it goes to auction. Just the way it goes. Good luck.

Snap Names, Name Jet, and Pool have the most horsepower by far as they as each has a large group of registrars behind them. Go Daddy is much cheaper but they have fewer feeds and probably a not very sophisticated catch algorithm. You do have to buy ahead but you can change your backorder to something else though if it is unsuccessful. If you truly apply for the best names, you will usually (but not always) loose at Go Daddy. If you REALLY want the name, you should apply at all of them. I once applied everywhere but Go Daddy and they got the name and it was an excellent one! If you are in this business, you need to be realistic. The competition is fierce. I have lost local geos for my county of 17K people (GreeneVA.com & Ruckersville.com). Neither is a 'drop of the day' but that didn't stop my unincorporated, populated 'spot' going for $1,700 and the other going for use on a charter fishing boat named 'Green Eva'. Be prepared for disappointment. It usually happens or you need deep pockets. Sorry, but that's the way it is! Really good drops are few and there is no guarantee even for mediocre names. Nothing 'belongs' to you!

As to Go Daddy, caught drops do go to auction (as all do) if there are multiple requests. This started last year. It was a real bargain before that. Also, if the name is at Go Daddy or one of their registrars (wild west, Go France, etc.) they will try to auction it at TDNAM.com first. If it is a good name, your Go Daddy drop position is useless as it will sell at TDNAM.com before it ever gets there. As others have noted, if the name is in the 'Pending Delete' phase, it matters not at all where it used to be. If it was at Go Daddy and wasn't sold at TDNAM, it likely has little to no traffic or revenue or it would have been purchased there. That doesn't mean that it is a bad name for potential development though but parking it isn't going to make you rich or likely even pay for the registration fee.

BTW - If you buy many Go Daddy drops, you should buy the 'Investors Edge' service. It costs $29.95 per month but you can buy or renew a domain with it and use a '$5 off $30' coupon from DealTaker.com to reduce the price. Drop spots then cost $11.99 each. You can then buy them in groups and use a '$15 off $75' coupon from our friends at Deal Taker too. Buy drops ahead of time and you can drop the service every other month or so.

Quality post IMO, you did put in quite a bit of effort to write about your experience!
    Thanks for sharing bud.
