I think it's a great time to go for it. This entire year..in 5 years you'll be asking yourself..IF ONLY I bought that name or this name. I hate that..I do it myself.

It depends, also, on what you mean by 'cheap'.

There are names that have just not been available, at all, for years, that come onto the market in times like this. They might be premium generics, fantastic names. And, the price might be substantial - but, it may be a name that, because of its quality and rarity, you feel its a fair bet that it'll be worth many times what you pay for it now, in years to come....

Today's 'substantial' price might be seen as a steal a few years down the road, for that rare gem.

As for more 'ordinary' names....All we can say is that names are cheaper today than, say, last year....They may get cheaper yet...Or, not.

Basically, do the homework, back your judgement & knowledge, and work within your wallet...If you're selective & careful, many names you buy today are likely to look cheap after awhile...

Sadly that does not mean they are good

I have now worked out the brunt of my own question in my own head.

I have $x,xxx. If i spend this money buying 1,2 good domains, renew all my good domains for 10 years and go offline will I REALLY be missing anything?

SOME people are selling great domains cheap at the moment based on the economy. If you have endless amounts of money buying these would perhaps be a great investment. I do not.

Of course if you get in quick and hand reg emerging technology domains etc you could make a quick buck. I cannot be bothered with that.

I suppose what I am trying to say is: I want generic .com/.net, LLL.com and traffic names. Are all the generics owned by knowledgable people/companies who wont sell cheap, likewise with LLL.com. Ignore traffic names for now.

If you are getting a bargain from an original registrant you need to act promptly, if not... you have time.

Is domaining now solely a reseller market?
    Cheers
