I'm still trying to figure out which ones were taken during registration this morning and which ones are still available. Most registrars still seem eager to take your money regardless of whether it's still available or not.

www.whois.us doesn't seem to work yet. Everyone is probably trying to divvy up the profits from this whole thing to see that everyone is equally compensated for the larger bidded names. Are there regulations for any of this stuff?

The whois database will be updated tomorrow. Registrars taking realtime registrations should be able to tell you if a domain is actually available. The Registrar <-> Registry protocol is online and fully operational.

Well i'm not about to fork over money for information that isn't up to the date because getting a refund from an internet company if like gettig laid from a hot girl that's out of your league. I did win a bid on one name and I had good queue placement so I don't know why I shouldn't have got it. I'm getting some information from whois searches on like business.us but others aren't coming up yet. Depending on if there is anything worthwhile left I may or may not buy one. 20-40 bucks is a lot to shell out right now.

Remember that if you bid on a .us name with one Registrar, that does not guarantee that you were the person who received the domain - only that you were the one from that Registrar who would have received the domain if that Registrar was the one who received the domain.

There were many, many Registrars submitting names at the same time when the Registry opened up this morning - and the name that you wanted may have been won by any other Registrar, not just the one where you were high bid...

Well here was my logic. Most of the people who were taking mass registrations first come first serve like GoDaddy.com and 000domains without auctions probably had a large amounts of names and therefore no priority on them. The ones with queues or auctions obviously want to get the money from the people who bid for them so they would have submitted them first thing. Sex.us on godaddy.com could very well have been submitted last so by going with a registar with an auction or queue you have a much better chance of getting the name (at least from my logic). I wonder if any newbie registrars croaked when the big boys started grabbing names and they weren't getting any because of poor pre-planning or technical limitations. For a run down of values on top bids at one auction:

    loans.us $15,000.00
    sex.us $11,000.00
    news.us $8,200.00
    casino.us $6,200.00
    business.us $3,500.00
    movies.us $3,500.00
    music.us $3,500.00
    bank.us $3,500.00
    mortgage.us $3,500.00
    drugs.us $3,500.00
    diabetes.us $2,800.00
    sports.us $2,700.00
    mortgages.us $2,500.00
    loan.us $2,000.00
    homes.us $2,000.00
    hotels.us $1,400.00
    travel.us $1,161.00
    xxx.us $1,000.00

So obviously if i'm the registrar i'm sure as hell gonna put in the top one first and try and collect my 15,0000. I bid $490 on my name so I know I wasn't that far down on the queue (at least top 60).

    $8.75 .us Domain Registration

CheapestRegistry.com provides real-time .us domain registration for $8.75/yr. with a live connection to the registry. I'm not aware of an online bulk whois checker for .us but if you get a free program called Domain Name Analyzer (try http://download.com.com/3000-2181-2579330.html), you can configure it for .us and do bulk whois checks with it.
