Very odd. Was there something in the original TOS where you got free privacy the first year if you agreed to pay for it the next year? I can't see any other way they can force you to buy it.

yes i'd be interested to know also.
have no names with privacy at GD but my gf bought a couple for her company and think checked privacy, think got free Hosting too as she was so confused by their upselling and crazy chaotic site, and impatient she regged them anyway
i dont mind gd as used to their site , but for noobs their site is a disaster and designed to confuse
i said to her they will try and bill you for all the free stuff next year so want her to push them to another gd account. will it remove privacy automatically? or can someone mention which thing to go to in account? i always undo auto renewal as a matter of course but never had to deal with privacy renewals etc before

Privacy must be removed before a domain may be pushed to another account.
While it is true that pushing a domain to another account will remove it's associated services, an administrative lock is placed on all domains with active privacy.

go to http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/agreements.asp?ci=8924 and you'll see there's nothing about that. Furthermore, since I don't trust any "free" meal (and I heard some horror stories about Godaddy) I was very sure to read the TOS to the A. It's absolutely impossible to delete it, there's absolutely no notice about you agreeing to pay a blackmail fee in exchange of that "free meal" and as I said before, both GoDaddy and DbP support will make it impossible to solve that, either by simply no answering (like they did for 2 weeks) or once domains expired AND ONLY AFTER POSTING HERE, support will contact you with a nonsensical answer to avoid you can solve this. And yes, the "nigerian" word came to my mind as well.

Keep in mind that any serious company not trying to scam you would make things easier from the start or at least solve the situation on request. They only made things more difficult hoping that once domains expired you'd be pressed to renew and pay the blackmail fee.

Well, just for a question of principle, I refuse to pay the blackmail and I prefer to lose my domains rather than being scammed.

the question remaining: is GoDaddy THAT desperate? Makes you think what's going on there...

Maybe it was because they had already expired it was necessary to pay the total bill that was due at time of expiration whch included the privacy fee because the renewal only could not be seperated from total invoice amount as a result of the expiration I am guessing.

this was 15 days before expiration date, so it wasn't the case. That's the main reason why they didn't answer on support, to let the domains expire. Anyone that worked with GoDaddy knows they usually answer within 24 hours. It may take a while since they fix things (I had some previous bad experiences) but they answer within 24 hours

*sigh* This isn't a scam or a trick. You signed up for it, clearly without actually having read the terms and conditions, because it is clearly stated in there.
Domainsbyproxy are a domain holding company. Technically speaking, they're the owners of the domain, but they allow you to hold sole rights over anything involving it because you've paid them a fee.

Not every niche domainer wants a google search of their name to reveal "owner of hugeblackcocks.net"

I put privacy on a lot of my more adult niche domains specifically because of that.

GoDaddy makes all these terms very clear on page 8 of their 14 page agreement; it's right before the spot where it mentions you have to sign the agreement in your own blood.

All privacy stuff at GD is handled by their other company, DomainsByProxy.com

To remove the privacy on a (GD registered) domain, at DomainsByProxy:

    Go to DomiansByProxy.com

    Click "MY ACCOUNT"

Login using your DomainsByProxy info (login Username/Customer no & Password).

If you don't know what it is, click "Forgot your password?" then "Retrieve Customer Number". Then after you get your number, click either "Reset Password" or "Retrieve Password Hint".

If you are already in your DomainsByProxy account, check the box to the right of the domain and click continue.

That gets rid of the privacy on the domain at GD....and, the danger of high-priced privacy at GD on renewal.

You've no idea what YOU are talking about. Not even a clue. As I said, I read it very carefully and nothing. So, unless you know some mysterious info about me and GoDaddy that nobody ever heard of, please inform yourself before talking. But let's assume you're some kind of god who got down to Earth to illustrate us poor mortals about the dialectics of scamming and explain this to me, since I'm just a mortal, and a pretty dumb one: Why Godaddy support evaded the questions or simply ignored all messages? Come, it should be easy to answer for someone with such powers as yours.

Yes.... in theory. Problem is that since I never signed with them I didn't have a customer number. Nor a mail where they would send the info. Nor anything. And GD support did never answer this question (go figure....) while DbP never answered ANYTHING until I posted here. And their answer was something like "aw, how sweet, you can't access your account with "our mysterious info"? Well, find out yourself or suck it, you aren't supposed to be not scammed!" (on a second thought, I'd have used HarveyJ mysterious super powers to find out that info since it's the only way to do it)

At this point I'm taking it humorously because I won't waste a sweat on these crooks, I've enough with letting know everybody what this scam is about

I still find it really hard to understand how GD or anyone else can legally force you (or would want to do that) to buy an optional service if you did not somehow agree to it at checkout (or opt-out at checkout), or the requirement in the TOS. Seems odd I have not seem others writting about GD making them purchase the high priced privacy?

Could it be that, because you got the privacy as part of a 'free' GD deal, somehow, the way that deal was set up by GD, a tech error was made by them, at the time, where the system didn't record your details as having taken out privacy (and didn't send you a confirm email etc)?

...With the result that when you contact GD/DBP about it now, their system just doesn't have any record (Customer number & Password) for the DomainsByProxy service you have...?

Could explain why they give you no answer...

But, there's no excusing them not getting to the bottom of it....There has to be SOME record....After all, your domains are there, with privacy on them.

    Very frustrating...

Next time renew 2 months before they expire. Now you have to wait the 78 days until they drop and you can renew them at another registrar.
