    Drop Listing for beginners

It's dropcatching season out there for domainers. It's always a good time to catch a nice dropped name. Catching dropped names requires an online account or facility registering domain names with a qualified registrar performing drop list auctions and transfer transactions. While some domainers invent a name and move forward developing the website, a judiciously chosen dropped domain usually hits the ground running with conservative earnings.

Dropped names might be portfolio names that an investment domainer is shedding, dot-net and dot org names of an exploratory web presence whose viability may be dwindling, or simply a case of a domainer (the domain name owner) being overwhelmed enough with administration responsibilities they don't catch their own notification emails for domain name renewal.

Many domain portfolio managers must weigh renewing a name against a drop catcher acquiring the name and succeeding where they have failed. Conservative acquisition of expired domains and driving traffic to maximize revenue is an excellent domain name marketing program and optimization strategy.

There are bargains and there are worthwhile investment names, but the best part is that dropped names almost always have a legacy "fishtail" of past ownership and online internet exposure. This lessens the "shock" of priming a new domain name to its traffic result. There is usually the component that a previously owned name has some added cachet or unseen appeal since it was created and registered by someone before.

Sometimes when looking over the drop list a domain name that the domain buyer may feel excited about will present itself. Managing the auction process without being prodded to overbid is an acquired skill. Drop list frenzy does occur when bidders wrangle over a name they barely planned to buy. Of course, resale to the original buyer is always a possible goal to leverage value from the dropped name purchase.

The exciting element of getting a dropped domain name is that there is an improved search result of possible ranking potential from previous website composition, online parking, link presence or just the after effects of savvy marketing and promotion. Domain names are commodities that retain legacy traffic value well into their initial ownership period.

If you are new to domaining and are unfamiliar with the term, it means that a name it going to be released from its current ownership in a period of days or has been in a renewal cycle long enough for the registrar to decide to sell it to the first come first served owner. Manual drop catching can be done live, or programmed pre-bidding or auction of a dropped name occurs after the registrar has determined it will not be renewed.

Depending on your personal domain name marketing strategy, review the keywords of each domain name you own.use those keywords as search terms in the drop lists files or websites dropping daily. Domain names "drop" when they kick over the calendar edge of their renewal expiration. Various web sites like www.sedo.com and www.snapnames.com compete for the drop list market.

Depending on the registrar, the renewal grace period may be a few weeks to a flimsy overnight push out the door into the drop catcher's net. Many drop catching services allow for keyword notification of domains that may be of interest to you or backorder options in case a name of interest ever "drops". Pending deletes, new registrations, and holds can match any given keyword and allow a domainer to survey what the domain name market is doing.

Search lists can be narrowed by extension or country codes. Since updates and changes can occur in the registrar world, daily releases of drop lists and key names occur. Additional fees may be charged if a bidding situation develops for acquisition of a dropping name. Some domainers for these reasons let names drop due to high renewal fees.

Some websites offer software that also manages the search, purchase, and bidding for expired names. Expired name services can be released via email from sites like www.justdropped.com which allow up to 100 keywords. Predefined stored keywords can save precious time and keystrokes from the daily dawn patrol of searching drop sites. Scanning entire drop list files in spreadsheet form can burn out optical function after a few weeks.

Google can also be used to find available domain names. Sometimes if you find an available name you can Google it to see the back history of associations with that name. Successful dropped name acquisitions will need Hosting and online application development. Profitable advertising and affiliate programs can then generate revenue based on visitor traffic and behavior for that domain name.

Sometimes a trademark or copyright or company name check is advisable. Your clever keyword hybrid for a game review media launch site might be an existing toy company already doing business with a flock of hungry lawyers ready to pounce on name infringement. Scanning bulk names from their source drop sites is not always a time saver when multiplied day by day.

Drop list name catching is a sport best tried in a controlled bidding or acquisition framework. But the potential profits that might result from capturing that attractive keyword or index rich domain name keep domainers sifting the drop lists 24 hours a day.
