I visit Mexico every year. I can tell you overwhelmingly .com.mx is more widely used at this time than .mx however as .mx gains recognition in Mexico which will take time I believe .mx will become the norm. It is shorter and makes more sense.
I can also say (in most instances not all) .com.mx is used for spanish websites and .com is used moreso for english websites however there are exceptions to this rule especially when the compnay can't obtain the .com
For the life of me I can't understand why people are registering english keywords on the forums moreso than the spanish ones.
In a few cases already on here I have seen english keywords registered with the spanish keyword left wide open which I can't understand?

it would seem logical, than .com.mx would get the most traffic and be search more, simply because it was released to the public before .mx

I'm from Mexico. mx is still too new to gain recognition here. At this moment .com.mx is overwhelmingly more popular than mx. Most people don't even know that .mx exists. It's going to take several years for mx reach the level of recognition of com.mx or replace it.
I also agree that it makes no sense to register English keywords with this extension, with a few exceptions. People in Mexico will search for "autos" or "coches" not for "cars".
