Minneapolis Star Tribune - $661 million dollars in debt.

Perhaps next big one is New York Times in about 6 months?
New York Times - $1 Billion in debt and may default on $400 million debt if
something major don't happen within 5 months.

It seems that the online revenue is now supporting the paper circulation, and the papers themselves are hanging on to the last possible minute. That's unreal debt ... that probably mounted as papers bought themselves time trying to figure out what happened to them.

The other factor is they are now competing with so many more "local" publishers/advertisers in a pure internet world. The Google, Yahoo, MSN local ads and geo domain websites who are now taking over the "local" function once monopolized by the newspaper.

I think you missed the real reason their failing. Most newspapers are full of leftwing ideology and people are sick of it. Same thing with network news.

My fiance works for a classified paper and she says they've been losing money for 6 years now. She is planning on going part time, to keep the paper in business.
